My God, the JoJo fandom does not rest, does it? First, they claim the spot for the best waifu in anime, and now they have stakes in the most powerful character in the world too? Wild. Hey, that’s just the story of Giorno Giovanna, but everybody calls him Giorno. (I…. can’t believe I got to use that meme. What the heck?)
Welcome to Character VS! A series for when you watch an anime and have thoughts like ‘Huh, I bet X can defeat Goku’. Because what are we if not massive nerds just waiting to prove that our favorite character is the best boy (or girl) in the entire game. Usually, we pit characters within the same show or universe, to make things more coherent and equalized. But we aren’t above shaking things up, now and then.
And that’s exactly what we’ll be doing here with Giorno Giovanna. Now, obviously, Gio is not the strongest character in all of anime. That’s just an absurd take. But a girl has got to wonder: with his parentage, why not?

Is It Possible To Compare Giorno Giovanna?

Like, how do you even calculate something like that? Do we take the biggest Shonen characters from the past 50 years and create some sort of table where we measure their individual strengths? Where would you even begin when some of them have literal demons residing inside of them, or planet-destroying capabilities? And most importantly, will it always come down to Goku, in the end?
(It can’t. We already agreed Zeno is the strongest character in Dragon Ball. Stop.)
Today, I’ll be taking one for the team. Let’s take a thorough look into why people claim Giorno Giovanna, the protagonist of the Golden Wind arc, is the strongest anime character of all time.
The Man, The Myth, The Legend.

Before we get to the ‘why’, we must tackle the ‘who’. Who is Giorno Giovanna, at his core? Besides being one of the strongest amalgamations of the Brando and Joestar bloodlines, what gives him strength? What motivates Giorno to be the most formidable of JoJo protagonists?
When we first meet our Golden Boy, he is known as Haruna Shiobana. He is the illegitimate son of Dio Brando, the main antagonist, conceived when Dio possessed Jonathan Joestar’s body. Because this show is nothing if not slightly homoerotic and completely bonkers.
Giorno’s goal is to join the mighty Passione gang, to fulfill his dream of becoming a ‘Gang-Star’. Being a descendent of the Joestar line, he is a natural-born Stand user.
Thanks to a difficult and tumultuous childhood, he is defined by his Resolve. This enables him to make important decisions without faltering, a characteristic in which he will always finish what he started. Even if it causes him pain.
(Gold Experience) Requiem For A Dream!

The thing about JoJo is that it’s all centers around powers called Stands. A Stand is the physical personification of one’s very soul. It is the embodiment of an individual’s life energy, and all JoJo protagonists have been able to harness it. Each Stand is different, with some that control weather, or can insta-heal, and then some can straight-up manipulate the time-space continuum.
And this is where our man Giorno is beyond OP. His Stands, Gold Experience, and Gold Experience Requiem, are probably the strongest in the entire franchise. Why? The former is a short-range attack that can pummel enemies into the ground. Pretty cool, right?
And then, there’s the latter, which can manipulate and create life itself. GER basically neutralizes the opponent’s actions, effectively resetting everything back to 0 which leaves Giorno unharmed and the opponent reeling because, what the actual hell?
Yeah, his power is so Goddamn broken, he’s both immortal and he can send his enemies into a never-ending death loop. Like, who can even beat something like that?
Characters That Can Beat Giorno Giovanna:

…..what? I told you, this is a serious piece of investigative journalism.
If Giorno’s powers depend upon time and rebirth, what would he do in a dimension where time doesn’t even exist? Therefore, could Madara Uchiha from Naruto be able to win against Giorno? With Kamui, he can just transport Giorno to a plane where his powers are useless, and the Limbo Clones can take care of the rest.
And hold up. Since GER depends partially on their opponent’s consciousness, could my girl Haruhi Suzumiya from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya be exempt from its influence? Think about it, Haruhi’s God-like powers are completely subconscious. GER can’t manipulate what it can’t anticipate.
No. I will not talk about Goku. Find better Shonen protagonists to fangirl over.
What about Saitama, from One Punch Man? He’s shown to be the literal most powerful character in his universe, having never lifted more than a single move to beat his enemies. And he’s conveniently immune to magic. You can’t be defeated by something that holds no power over you!
Basically, no. Giovanni Giorno is a lot of things, but he’s not the most powerful anime character of all time. I’m sorry JoJo fans, better luck next time!
