An Isekai anime is bad enough, but having to keep track of characters in a Harem–Isekai anime like Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation? That is way more difficult. Like, the number of women that Rudeus Greyrat meets, let alone that end up being potential love interests? Yeah, it’s easy to get lost. Which, hey, remember Sara, that cute blonde from the light novel? Do Rudeus and Sara end up meeting again?
Sara came into Rudeus’s life at a time when he was depressed after Eris Greyrat left and wandered the Central Continent as ‘Rudeus of Quagmire’. On the way to the Ranoa Kingdom, he meets Sara for the first time around, while she is part of the Counter Arrows. However, it turns out she was more than just a one-off side character because Rudeus and Sarah meet again twice. Once in Volume 13, during Chapter 10 where she’s working for the Amazon Ace, and then again in Volume 23, where she’s become second-in-command.
The reason a lot of the Mushoku Tensei fandom wanted Rudeus and Sara to meet again is because there was a lot of chemistry between the two characters. Like, more so than with his actual wives. And it’s not hard to see where this idea comes from. After all, sometimes the side character is the best girl. But let’s discuss Rudeus and Sara’s meet-cute and eventual relationship in another round of Lore Analysis!

Rudeus And Sara: The One That Got Away?
Sara is a unique character in the Mushoku Tensei lore. And by that, I mean she is one of the only characters that doesn’t exist in the original web novel. Instead, she was created for the light novel as a companion to Rudeus during his self–inflicted exile. But despite all that, she’s one of the more beloved characters in the series.
And it’s not hard to see why. Sara is a character who was living her life outside of Rudeus’s circle at the time. When they met she was already an A-ranked Adventurer, accomplished and headstrong in a way that resembled Eris so much. She is just as Tsundere, at the very least, refusing Rudeus’s advances while quietly also nursing a crush on him.
But the other thing about Sara that worked was when she and Rudeus met each other. Rudeus didn’t meet her when he was very young and cocky, like how he was when met his other wives. No, Rudeus met Sara when she was her individual, doing her own thing while he was feeling less than great. She feels like a less intense version of Eris, which makes her attitude more amicable towards Rudeus.
Therefore, Sara ended up making sense as the main love interest over Sylphiette, Eris, or Roxy. For some fans, she felt more compatible with Rudeus than others.
The Miscommunication Trope Strikes Again!
So, if you’ve read Mushoku Tensei up until Volume 7, where do Rudeus and Sara meet? Well, you have a rough idea of what happens. Despite their initial hostility and later flirtations, nothing truly comes out of Sara and Rudeus getting together. And the reason for that? Our dear old friend, miscommunication.
After Sara had warmed up to Rudeus, the two started realizing that there was a spark between them. One night after getting drunk, Sara asked Rudeus to take her back and the two got entangled. But during said entanglement, it turned out that Rudeus didn’t seem much interested in whatever the two had going on, and so Sarah left. Embarrassed and angry, she thought it was because Rudeus didn’t find her attractive or something.
Of course, we later learn that wasn’t the case at all. But a few more misconceptions later and the damage was too deep. Though she did end up apologizing for hurting him after talking to Suzanne, there was just no salvaging the romantic side of their relationship. By the time Sara tried finding Rudeus to apologize, he had already moved on to Soldat’s party and left.
They meet again when Sarah is working for Amazon’s Ace in the Ranoa Kingdom and have a long overdue chat, realizing that their relationship is fine the way it is. They meet again later on when Rudeus and Eris are searching for the North God, but by then it’s clear she has moved on too.
And like, good for her to avoid the harem situation! By the end of it all, we see Sara comment on how she should probably just settle down with a husband and some kids. So, kudos to her for prioritizing herself, but no wonder fans think about what could’ve been if she had become the 4th wife instead.
