In Bleach, every character is going to get stacked up against the protagonist eventually. So, the question of whether Jugram Haschwalth is stronger than Ichigo Kurosaki? Yeah, it’s not that surprising. Especially now that the interest in Bleach has been rising, thanks to the release of the long awaited Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War. And with the introduction of the Sternritter, the Shinigami are going to be facing their biggest threat yet. So, yes, Jugram’s power levels here are kind of important.
But is Jugram Haschwalth stronger than Ichigo at his mightiest? Honestly, I know this answer should be a hard one but based on Jugram’s Schrift alone, the odds are in his favor. As the second-in-command to Emperor Yhwach, I wouldn’t expect anything less either. Of course Ichigo would win the war for Soul Society in the long run. But if you put Jugram against Ichigo in a one-on-one battle? The winner is undoubtedly Jugram Haschwalth aka The Balance, by a landslide.
Like, how do you get a win over the guy that can literally dispel any and all misfortune that might come his way? Like, doesn’t that make it physically impossible for him to lose? And yet, that is what the Sternritter are, an elite coalition of the most powerful Quincy warriors in Wandereich’s army. And each of them has power that is almost unfathomable in its manifestation. Like, one of them can just will things into existence if they believe hard enough, aka The Vision. So, safe to say that Tite Kubo, the mangaka for Bleach, really made them OP (overpowered).
But then again, this is Ichigo Kurosaki’s tale. He is the undoubted center of Bleach, and the story will end with his triumphant win against the ‘bad guys’. So Jugram would be defeated by Ichigo, indirectly as it may be. But that doesn’t mean we can’t take these two powerful characters and see how they would work out in a fight. So, in today’s Character Versus, let’s see exactly why Jugram Haschwalth is stronger than Ichigo, but why Ichigo is still going to win.

Jugram Haschwalth: The Ace In Yhwach’s Strategy
First things first: Jugram is literally Yhwach’s right hand man. He is his advisor, and even assumes the role of leader when Yhwach goes into his slumber. That’s the amount of trust that Yhwach places in his underling, and it’s a clear show of power. That’s why Jugram is the Grandmaster of the Sternritter, he’s the natural leader.
And being the leader means you get perks. When he was inoculated into the ranks of the Sternritter, he was given his Schrift by Yhwach himself, a unique power that was his own to hone and finesse. It also gave him his title, B, which stood for the power he had called The Balance. The thing about The Balance is that it’s kind of hard to counter. Like, at all. It’s probably one of the most foolproof of all the abilities we’ve seen so far in Bleach. And the fact that nobody is safe from it, whether they are from Soul Society or Hueco Mundo, makes it that much more deadly.
In retrospect, it is literally turning your luck. Jugram can tip the scales for any battle or choice made, as long as it is in his sphere of influence. The Balance quite literally creates a balance of opportunities, turning a loss into a win at a moment’s notice. However, that isn’t even the strongest form of Jugram’s powers. No, that honor goes to The Almighty, which only happens when Yhwach takes a step back and Jugram activates his third eye. With this, he can literally see into the future, therefore directing his original powers into the exact strategy that it would take for them to win.
Beyond that, he has immense spiritual power, Reishi manipulation and can even open portals to the Royal Realm via The Key. All of Jugram is practically designed to win, like it is his birthright. So, when a man can flip his own fortune, what hope does anyone else have to get one up on them?
Ichigo Kurosaki: The True Balance Of Three Dimensions
Ichigo might not be the most experienced of Shinigami, nor the most powerful at this specific moment. But what he is is the perfect amalgamation of everything that is important in Bleach. Technically, there are three specific worlds we are dealing with, and somehow Ichigo Kurosaki has ties to all of them. If Jugram can ‘balance’ the scales of a war through abilities, Ichigo himself is the key to peace through said war.
Ichigo’s father was a Shinigami, and his mother was infected by a Hollow. He was raised in the human realm, as a human and yet has ties back to the Quincy, who are the natural enemies of the Soul Reapers. All of this gets really convoluted and would make anyone want to just give up on this whole heritage business. Except Ichigo accepts all of the different powers whirling inside of him, and comes out as a better hero for of it. He has the spiritual prowess of a Shinigami, the immense strength of a Quincy, the destructive powers of a Hollow, but all of that is balanced by his very innate sense of humanity.
It’s how Ichigo can counter almost any being in a battle, because he can figure out who is vulnerable to what. He can also understand where all these different creatures are coming from, even if he might not agree. In the end, what makes Ichigo powerful isn’t how many abilities he has, or how superpowered his Bankai is. It isn’t about his final forms, such as True Shikai or True Bankai. It’s the fact that Ichigo is empathetic, but just. He has a strict moral code and he abides by it, no matter what the situation.
And ultimately, he has the protagonist’s armor, which means that whatever happens, Ichigo will survive it. And flourish.
Winner: Hard to Beat Jugram’s Schrift

Ultimately, this is about whether Jugram Haschwalth is stronger than Ichigo. And in a battle between the two, Jugram would obviously win. No matter what Ichigo throws at him, Jugram can easily use Schrift to counter it and evade. He can also use the ability on the offensive, basically returning Ichigo’s attack back at him. If Jugram Haschwalth gets injured, he can easily flip it. So, no, Ichigo wouldn’t survive a battle with Sternritter’s head.
However, manga fans already know what Jugram Haschwalth’s fate is going to end up being. And we all know how Shounen series usually end. While Jugram is definitely a force to be reckoned with, Ichigo wins solely on the basis of his plot armor, something that is natural to him because he is the ultimate protagonist of Bleach.
But yeah, ultimately? Jugram is just not a character Ichigo can take down single handedly. Luckily, he isn’t alone in the Thousand Year Blood War. And Yhwach, alongside the Sternritter, is going to be getting exactly what’s coming to him.
