Future Rudeus Timeline Explained: Why Oldeus Traveled Back in Time

What the Future Rudeus timeline actually is

Future Rudeus travels back because he has spent decades living through the consequences of Hitogami's basement trap and can no longer reach Hitogami within his own remaining lifetime. In that future, Roxy dies while pregnant, Rudeus collapses into grief and self-destruction, Sylphie dies after leaving with Ariel, Eris is later killed protecting him, and still more people close to him are lost. His final answer is not to "reset" himself but to physically reach his younger self, hand over a diary of the failed future, and warn him before the first catastrophe happens.

Oldeus's visit is the intervention at the heart of Turning Point 4. The doomed and changed timelines separate the losses he remembers from the future his warning makes possible.

Spoiler warning: This explanation follows Rifujin na Magonote's original web novel, including the future diary and the ending of Rudeus's main story.

"Oldeus" is a popular fandom nickname for Future Rudeus, not a separate canonical name used for a new character. He is an elderly Rudeus Greyrat who lived through a disastrous version of the years following the basement incident.

It is safer to call his history an averted future than insist Mushoku Tensei establishes a conventional branching multiverse. The older Rudeus experienced those events and traveled into the past. That does not establish what happens to his abandoned history after the intervention.

Younger Rudeus does not inherit his older self's memories. Future Rudeus arrives physically, already ruined by the trip, and gives him information. The diary is evidence from a lived future, not a prophecy.

The chain begins after the journey to find a treatment for Nanahoshi's illness, involving Perugius and Atofe. Hitogami tells him to inspect his basement. In Future Rudeus's history, he follows that advice, sees nothing important, and leaves. What he fails to notice is the rat whose escape sets Hitogami's real plan in motion.

Roxy's death is the first domino

The rat carries a magic-stone disease that causes petrification. After escaping the basement, it contaminates food that Roxy later eats. She is pregnant at the time, making Hitogami's target more significant than Rudeus initially understands.

Roxy falls ill, and ordinary detoxification magic cannot cure her. Cliff identifies the disease and determines that God-rank detoxification is required. Rudeus, Cliff, and Zanoba travel to the Holy Country of Millis to obtain the necessary spell information, eventually stealing the relevant book when normal access proves impossible.

Their escape is disastrous. Cliff dies, their convenient return route is lost, and Rudeus and Zanoba become wanted by the Millis Church. By the time Rudeus finally returns home, Roxy has already died after the disease progressively crystallized her body.

This is the crucial point of the diary timeline. Hitogami does not personally appear and strike Roxy down. He engineers a small, plausible chain of events whose cause is almost invisible until it is too late. Later, after Future Rudeus has warned his younger self, the rat is found and killed before the contamination can occur.

Hitogami later explains why he targeted Roxy: Rudeus's descendants can help Orsted defeat him. Preventing Roxy's pregnancy from producing that future is therefore part of Hitogami's self-preservation strategy.

Roxy's death destroys Rudeus before Hitogami has to do anything else

Rudeus does not respond to Roxy's death with a clean transition into heroic revenge. He breaks down. He drinks heavily, neglects Sylphie, spends time away from home, and increasingly behaves in ways that damage the people still trying to support him.

Sylphie attempts to comfort him, but Rudeus withdraws from her. His fear that he will take his anger out on her becomes another excuse not to communicate. He eventually sleeps with another woman, worsening the collapse of their marriage.

Around the same period, Eris returns from the years of training she undertook after leaving Rudeus. Future Rudeus is too emotionally damaged and still too trapped in his old misunderstanding of her departure to repair their relationship. He drives her away.

Sylphie ultimately leaves with Ariel, who returns to Asura to pursue the throne. Rudeus follows too late, hoping to reconcile. In the diary's failed future, Ariel's bid collapses. Luke and Sylphie die, and Rudeus finds their bodies displayed after the defeat. Ariel is reported captured and awaiting execution.

Hitogami triggers and exploits the catastrophe, but Rudeus's own choices worsen the damage. The diary is deliberately ugly about that decline.

Eris keeps trying to save him, and he keeps misunderstanding her

After Sylphie's death, Future Rudeus becomes more violent, isolated, and obsessive. His life narrows around learning about Hitogami and acquiring enough power to reach him. The diary also records a serious moral collapse: Rudeus becomes abusive and violent, including committing sexual violence.

Eris continues crossing his path. From her perspective, she still loves Rudeus and repeatedly tries to protect or correct him. From his perspective, years of resentment and paranoia distort those encounters. He even begins to suspect that she may somehow be connected to Hitogami.

That misunderstanding ends only after it can no longer be repaired.

While seeking information from the immortal Demon King Atofe, Future Rudeus becomes involved in a fight with Atofe and her guard. He grows careless. Eris intervenes to save him and is killed as a consequence. Ghislaine then explains what Rudeus had failed to accept: Eris had continued following him because she loved him.

Her death is especially important to the logic of Future Rudeus's final warning. Telling his younger self to contact Eris is not romantic housekeeping. It is an attempt to correct one of his defining failures before resentment hardens into decades of mutual pain.

The diary keeps getting worse as Rudeus outlives his relationships

Future Rudeus does become enormously more capable. With Zanoba, he advances powered armor technology, and through his own research he develops or refines techniques involving electricity, gravity, and other unconventional applications of magic. Power cannot reverse the losses already recorded.

Years pass. Zanoba is eventually killed by the Order of the Temple, and Julie, Ginger, and Aisha are killed as well. The diary does not give equally explicit fates for every member of Rudeus's family. In particular, readers should not turn the absence of Lucy, Norn, or Lilia from later entries into confirmed deaths. Younger Rudeus himself notices that the record has gaps.

By this stage, Future Rudeus is fixated on Hitogami. He hunts for information from long-lived beings, ancient lore, and Dragon Race knowledge. His revenge increasingly consumes the rest of his identity.

The diary eventually becomes a record of research. Rudeus learns more about the structure of the Six-Faced World and the Void World where Hitogami resides. He also learns that reaching Hitogami through the conventional route would require ancient Dragon Race treasures that he cannot realistically gather before the end of his life.

That realization is the practical reason time travel becomes relevant. He has spent decades becoming stronger, but the remaining task still exceeds the time available to him.

How Future Rudeus develops time travel

Future Rudeus's time travel is not a convenient spell that any sufficiently talented magician can learn. It is the product of prolonged research, including knowledge derived from Dragon Race techniques and Rudeus's increasingly unconventional approach to magic.

By old age, he has concluded that going backward is more achievable than completing the path to Hitogami in his current lifetime. He develops a form of past-directed teleportation or time-travel magic and chooses the basement incident as his destination.

The trip is extraordinarily costly. Much of Future Rudeus's body fails to make the journey intact, and he cannot survive for long after arrival.

Canon therefore does not establish an easy "save point" mechanic. Future Rudeus achieves one extreme, one-way intervention, and the attempt kills him.

He brings the diary because he has too much history to explain in the short time his damaged body gives him. His younger self can read the consequences after the older man is gone.

What Future Rudeus tells his younger self to change

The most immediate instruction is simple: do not follow Hitogami's basement advice. After Future Rudeus dies, younger Rudeus freezes the basement before opening the door, then retrieves and seals away the dead rat. The chain that killed Roxy is broken before it starts.

Future Rudeus also leaves three broader instructions: consult Nanahoshi, contact Eris, and distrust Hitogami without recklessly declaring open opposition to him.

Those instructions are not all completed before Hitogami's next visit. After reading the diary, Rudeus is confronted by Hitogami in a dream and pressured to kill Orsted to protect his family. He then sends his letter to Eris and consults Nanahoshi, who helps him examine the time-travel problem.

The Orsted rematch becomes another decisive divergence. Rudeus loses, but Eris arrives after receiving his letter and fights for him. Both survive, and Orsted offers Rudeus another path: become his subordinate and work against Hitogami. This is not a replay of Eris's diary death, which happens during a later confrontation with Atofe and her guards.

Rudeus accepts.

The warning changes more than Roxy's fate

Saving Roxy prevents the first catastrophe, but the larger change is that younger Rudeus stops facing Hitogami alone.

He reconciles with Eris rather than spending decades misreading her. He gains Orsted as an ally and employer. He can use the diary's political information when Ariel's succession struggle approaches, helping produce circumstances radically different from the failed coup Future Rudeus experienced. Sylphie, Ariel, Luke, Zanoba, Aisha, and others are therefore no longer moving through the exact conditions recorded in the diary.

The diary does not become a perfect future guide. Once Rudeus makes different choices, new problems appear. Its value is strategic: it identifies Hitogami as the hidden enemy, exposes lethal pressure points, and shows which relationships Rudeus must not throw away.

The thematic contrast is clear: Future Rudeus accumulates power while becoming increasingly alone, while younger Rudeus survives by rebuilding trust, accepting help, and finding allies.

Averting the diary does not make everyone immortal. The web novel's ending leaves Roxy and Sylphie alive after Rudeus, while Eris has died naturally before him. Their escape from Oldeus's disasters is not a promise that none of them will ever die.

Where the diary and the anime turning point fit

In the author's web novel, installment 154 contains the visitor's warning; installments 155 and 156 contain the diary. Those are web-novel installment numbers, not licensed light-novel chapters.

The official anime site identifies Season 3 Episode 11 as "Turning Point 4". Its September 2, 2026 announcement scheduled it for September 6 at 24:00 JST, meaning midnight at the start of September 7.

The preview describes the escape from Atofe, Sokas grass for Nanahoshi's Dryne disease, Rudeus's return home, Hitogami's advice, and a mysterious visitor. It does not establish how much of the diary, or of Light Novel Volume 15, the episode adapts.

Oldeus does not go back because he has discovered a painless redo. He goes back because he can no longer repair his own future. His last act gives his younger self the information to prevent its catastrophes.
