Is Atofe Stronger Than Rudeus? Who Wins in Mushoku Tensei

Atofe is stronger than an unarmored Rudeus in the direct, close-range fight she wants, but later Rudeus can defeat her with Magic Armor Version One. The light novel demonstrates both sides: Volume 14 shows how dangerous Atofe is when Rudeus lacks the equipment to match her speed and durability, while Volume 22 gives Rudeus a much stronger loadout and a clear combat victory. That does not mean he can permanently kill the Immortal Demon King.

The clean comparison is not "Atofe always wins"or"Rudeus eventually outscales her." Atofe has the natural physical advantage; equipped Rudeus has the armor, range, and sustained firepower to overcome it.

Why Atofe Is a Bad Matchup for Base Rudeus

Rudeus has enormous magical output, fast casting, strong tactics, and a wide spell set. His recurring weakness is physical.

Unlike elite swordsmen, he does not naturally use battle aura to reinforce his body at the highest level. If a fast opponent crosses his spell range, Rudeus can be injured much more easily than his reputation as a magician suggests.

Atofe is almost the opposite. Atoferatofe Rybak is an Immortal Demon King with immense strength, speed, endurance, and regeneration. She is not merely a durable brawler; her training gives her real martial skill.

That is why "who has more destructive power?" is the wrong question. Rudeus can produce attacks strong enough to hurt Atofe. The issue is whether he can keep distance and survive long enough for those attacks to decide the fight.

What Happens in Their First Fight?

The Volume 14 encounter happens during the search connected to Nanahoshi's illness. Rudeus and his companions face Atofe after seeking Kishirika on the Demon Continent.

Rudeus can affect her. His electrical magic is valuable because disrupting movement matters even against someone who can regenerate physical damage. Zanoba's extraordinary strength also creates openings that Rudeus could not reliably manufacture alone.

Volume 14 does not establish a clean solo win for Rudeus. Allies, interruptions, and escape pressure shape the encounter. Atofe remains a threat he has to manage rather than an opponent he has clearly surpassed.

Rudeus's nickname can also distort power-scaling discussions. "Quagmire" describes his adventuring reputation and combat style, not a ranking above melee monsters. See why Rudeus is called Quagmire for that distinction.

The Magic Armor Changes the Matchup

Rudeus's Magic Armor exists largely to compensate for the physical gap between a mage and the world's elite close-range fighters.

Version One is huge, mana-hungry, and impractical for daily use, but it gives Rudeus what he normally lacks: strength, durability, and the ability to remain functional under attacks that would overwhelm his unarmored body.

It also lets him combine that protection with heavy ranged weapons. The Stone Cannon Gatling Gun is especially important against Atofe. A single attack is one thing; a sustained barrage forces even an immortal opponent to keep regenerating while being repeatedly damaged and denied an easy approach.

The armor changes the question from "can Rudeus survive Atofe reaching him?"to"can Atofe break through the armor and continuous fire before Rudeus suppresses her?"

In Volume 22, the answer favors Rudeus.

Does Rudeus Beat Atofe in Volume 22?

Yes. Rudeus defeats Atofe in their later confrontation while using Magic Armor Version One and his heavy offensive equipment.

The battle is not proof that Atofe has become weak. Eris participates in the confrontation, and Atofe remains the aggressive close-range threat established earlier. The difference is that Rudeus arrives with equipment designed for opponents of her level.

The Stone Cannon barrage tears through Atofe's defenses and body faster than natural toughness can make irrelevant. Her immortality allows recovery, but the fight reaches a point where she accepts the result.

That is a canonical win for armored Rudeus. It is not proof that he can erase Atofe permanently.

Defeating Atofe Is Not the Same as Killing Her

The Immortal Demon Tribe's defining advantage is regeneration. Atofe can recover from damage that would make the result final against a normal human opponent.

This creates two separate questions:

  1. Can Rudeus beat Atofe in a battle?
  2. Can Rudeus permanently kill Atofe?

Volume 22 gives strong evidence for the first. It does not give Rudeus a demonstrated permanent-kill feat against her.

Saying "Atofe is immortal, so Rudeus cannot beat her"ignores the actual result. Saying"Rudeus beat her, so her immortality no longer matters" makes the opposite mistake. Rudeus can overwhelm her under the right conditions without nullifying what she is.

What About Version Two and Version Zero?

Rudeus develops several forms of Magic Armor, but they should not be combined into one imaginary peak feat.

Version Two is more practical than Version One but sacrifices some of its extreme performance. Its existence does not retroactively change which equipment Rudeus used in each battle.

Version Zero is later war equipment designed for exceptionally dangerous circumstances. It is tempting to use it in hypothetical debates, but the story does not give us a clean Version Zero-versus-Atofe rematch.

The strongest direct evidence remains the fight the light novel shows: Version One Rudeus defeats Atofe in Volume 22.

Oldeus Does Not Count as Main-Timeline Rudeus

Future Rudeus becomes a different magician after decades of research. His diary includes a separate, disastrous history involving Atofe's side and Eris's death.

Those events belong to an averted future. They should not be combined with the main Rudeus's feats as if one version simultaneously possesses every ability and outcome from both histories. The Oldeus timeline explains that split.

Anime, Manga, Light Novel, and Web-Novel Status

The light novel is the clearest basis for this comparison. Volume 14 establishes the first encounter, while Volume 22 provides the rematch that proves armored Rudeus can defeat her.

The Season 3 anime has adapted the first side. Episode 10, "An Audience with an Immortal Demon King," brings Rudeus face-to-face with Atofe. Episode 11 begins after the group escapes her pursuit. The Volume 22 rematch remains far beyond the anime.

The licensed English manga is also far behind that rematch. Volume 23 is still around the Teleport Labyrinth material, so manga-only readers have not reached the later benchmark.

The web novel contains an earlier version of these broad events, but the published light novel revises and formalizes the story. Exact matchup claims here use the light novel rather than treating web-novel wording as identical canon.

So Who Is Stronger?

If Rudeus is unarmored and forced into Atofe's preferred range, Atofe has the decisive physical advantage. If Rudeus has Magic Armor Version One, sufficient mana, heavy weapons, and room to use them, the light novel shows that he can win.

Equipment is part of the answer, not a loophole. Rudeus's later strength is built around solving his weaknesses through preparation, engineering, allies, and tactical magic. Atofe's strength is embodied in her immortal, battle-trained body.

The Volume 22 result says something more precise than "Rudeus is stronger": Rudeus eventually develops a combat setup capable of defeating Atofe, even though her immortality and natural physical power remain advantages he does not possess.
