Does Rudeus Get His Hand Back?

Yes. Rudeus eventually gets his missing left hand back. The Manatite Hydra tears it off in light novel Volume 12; his Advanced-tier healing can close the stump but cannot replace the lost hand. Zanoba and Cliff later give him the Zaliff Prosthesis. After Rudeus's Volume 15 battle with Orsted, Orsted regenerates his severed right arm and restores the old missing left hand.

Spoiler scope: light novel Volumes 12-15, including the Manatite Hydra battle and Rudeus's second fight with Orsted.

Rudeus loses his left hand in the Hydra fight

The injury happens at the end of the Teleportation Labyrinth expedition in Volume 12. Rudeus, Paul, Roxy, Elinalise, Talhand, and Geese reach the labyrinth guardian, the Manatite Hydra. Because the Hydra's scales interfere with magic, beating it requires the group to fight at dangerously close range.

During the final exchange, Rudeus attacks one of the Hydra's heads at its eye. The creature's movement catches his left hand and tears it away. The severed hand is caught in the Hydra's head, which is then burned, leaving it unrecoverable.

The light novel identifies the missing part as Rudeus's left hand. The official anime synopsis for the aftermath episode uses the broader Japanese term hidariude ("left arm"). These describe the same Hydra injury, not two different amputations.

The injury sits beside the much larger emotional cost of the fight: Paul dies protecting Rudeus. That aftermath can make the missing hand feel secondary to Rudeus even though it remains a practical disability.

Why doesn't Rudeus simply heal the hand back?

Rudeus uses healing immediately. He casts Advanced-tier Shine Healing on himself, sealing the stump, stopping the bleeding, and repairing lesser damage.

What it cannot do is regenerate the hand that is no longer there.

Healing magic in Mushoku Tensei is not a single all-purpose reset button. Rudeus's Advanced-tier spell can repair serious wounds, but Volume 12 establishes that the level he can cast is insufficient to restore what has been completely lost. The problem is not that he forgets to heal himself; his healing cannot reverse this amputation.

The Zaliff Prosthesis becomes Rudeus's new left hand

In Volume 13, Zanoba's research into magical automatons produces a practical answer, with Cliff contributing to the magic-circle work. The result is the Zaliff Prosthesis, a mana-powered artificial hand fitted to Rudeus's left side.

It is more than a rigid prop. Rudeus can open and close the fingers, manipulate objects, and receive dulled tactile information through it. Feeding the device mana can produce much more strength than a normal hand. The official anime story description also identifies the Zaliff prosthetic hand as his new left hand and credits Zanoba and Cliff with helping him obtain it.

This is a prosthetic replacement, not the recovery of his biological hand.

The same research tradition later feeds into Rudeus's larger equipment projects. For that engineering side, see our breakdown of Rudeus's Magic Armor.

Orsted later cuts off Rudeus's right arm

The next major limb injury is easy to mix up with the Hydra loss because it happens during another defining battle.

In Volume 15, Rudeus prepares extensively for his second fight with Orsted. He enters the confrontation wearing the Magic Armor and still relies on the Zaliff prosthesis on his left side.

Orsted slices away the Magic Armor's left hand. The prose then makes a separate bodily injury explicit: when Orsted cuts through the armor's right arm, Rudeus's actual right arm is still inside it. Rudeus is left with a bleeding right-arm stump while the natural left hand he lost to the Hydra is still absent.

Eris then enters the confrontation, changing the immediate course of the fight. We cover what Eris does against Orsted separately.

Orsted restores both sides after the battle

After Rudeus submits to Orsted and swears to work for him, Orsted uses powerful healing magic on him. In Volume 15's aftermath, Rudeus tests his hands by closing them into fists and feels his fingertips against his palms on both sides.

Orsted has regenerated the right arm severed during their fight and restored the left hand taken by the Manatite Hydra in Volume 12. He does not merely repair the most recent wound; he also reverses the older amputation that Rudeus's own healing could not fix.

Rudeus has two natural hands again, not a newly repaired prosthesis.

The healing happens at the turning point where Rudeus's relationship with Orsted changes from mortal opposition to service. The reasons for that alliance are covered in why Rudeus works for Orsted.
