Why Does Rudeus Work for Orsted? Their Alliance Explained

Rudeus works for Orsted because Orsted offers the one thing Rudeus actually wants: a realistic way to protect his family from Hitogami. After Oldeus exposes Hitogami's manipulation, Rudeus initially obeys Hitogami and tries to kill Orsted. He loses. Instead of finishing him, Orsted recognizes Rudeus's value and offers another choice: betray Hitogami, become his subordinate, and fight the real enemy together.

For Rudeus, this is not a sudden conversion to Orsted's ancient cause. His priority is simpler. He serves Orsted because protecting Sylphie, Roxy, his children, and the rest of his family matters more to him than loyalty to either god.

Their relationship gradually develops beyond that desperate deal, but the first agreement is an exchange of protection, information, and cooperation against Hitogami.

Where the Anime Leaves Rudeus and Orsted

The anime has reached the event that makes this alliance possible, but not the alliance itself.

Mushoku Tensei Season 3 Episodes 12 and 13 cover the arrival of Rudeus's older future self, commonly called Oldeus by fans, and the diary recording the catastrophic future waiting for Rudeus if he continues trusting Hitogami.

Oldeus Destroys Rudeus's Trust in Hitogami

Before Oldeus appears, Rudeus has reasons to be wary of Hitogami, but he still follows his advice because that advice often appears useful.

Oldeus changes that completely.

He comes from a ruined future in which Rudeus suffers devastating losses after continuing down the path Hitogami set for him. His diary gives present-day Rudeus something Hitogami cannot easily dismiss: a record written by Rudeus himself explaining how badly events can go.

The important lesson is not simply that something terrible happens. It is that Hitogami has been deliberately steering Rudeus toward outcomes that protect Hitogami's own future.

Rudeus therefore stops treating Hitogami as an eccentric supernatural adviser. He now understands him as an enemy capable of manipulating people and events around his family.

Why Hitogami Tells Rudeus to Kill Orsted

Hitogami's response pushes Rudeus into the rematch.

Rudeus learns that his descendants are connected to a future in which Orsted can eventually reach and defeat Hitogami. That gives Hitogami a strong reason to interfere with Rudeus's family line.

Hitogami then turns Rudeus's greatest vulnerability against him: his fear of losing his family. The deal is that Rudeus should eliminate Orsted, after which Hitogami claims he will leave Rudeus and his family alone.

The ongoing danger comes from Hitogami. Rudeus does not attack Orsted because Orsted has been hunting his family. He attacks because Hitogami convinces him that killing Orsted is the practical way to keep them alive.

From Rudeus's perspective, there is a grim logic to it. Hitogami cannot simply be reached and attacked. Orsted can. If Rudeus must destroy one enemy to make the danger stop, Orsted initially looks like the only target he can physically fight.

Rudeus Tries to Kill Orsted and Fails

Rudeus does not approach the rematch casually.

He prepares the Magic Armor, lays traps, plans a surprise attack, uses powerful long-range magic, and tries to exploit every advantage he can create. This is one of the clearest examples in the series of Rudeus treating combat like an engineering problem instead of a heroic duel.

It is not enough. Orsted survives the ambush, closes the distance, dismantles Rudeus's advantages, and defeats him.

Eris's arrival prevents the confrontation from ending immediately, but the battle has already answered the important question: Rudeus cannot remove Orsted from the board because Hitogami told him to. The fight's full motivation is covered in why Rudeus fights Orsted again.

That failure creates a third option Rudeus had not trusted before: joining Orsted instead.

What Rudeus Asks Orsted For

The decisive conversation is remarkably straightforward.

Orsted offers Rudeus a place on his side. Rudeus does not demand power, status, money, or revenge. He asks whether Orsted really has a way to protect his family from Hitogami.

He then pushes further: is that protection guaranteed?

Orsted does not lie to him. He says there is a way to defend them, but he cannot promise absolute safety because even he does not completely understand everything Hitogami can do.

That uncertainty matters. Hitogami repeatedly manipulates Rudeus through selective truths and carefully framed promises. Orsted gives him an answer that is less comforting but more credible.

Rudeus accepts. He asks for Orsted's help and agrees to serve beneath him. That is the real beginning of their alliance.

Orsted Is Not the Source of the Original Threat

There is one important complication in the battle.

Orsted gives Rudeus a brutal ultimatum while Rudeus is still aligned with Hitogami. As long as Rudeus remains Hitogami's apostle, Orsted considers him an enemy who cannot simply be allowed to escape.

That should not be confused with the threat that caused the fight. Rudeus entered the battle because Hitogami placed his family's future in danger and pushed him toward killing Orsted. Orsted's battlefield threat is part of forcing Rudeus to choose a side after that conflict has already begun.

Orsted immediately pairs that ultimatum with an alternative: leave Hitogami, join him, and receive his protection.

Why Does Orsted Accept Rudeus?

Because Rudeus is extraordinarily useful against Hitogami.

Orsted identifies several unusual qualities. Rudeus has enormous magical reserves associated with the Laplace Factor. His Magic Armor gives those reserves practical combat value. He is also unusually resistant to the curse that causes most people to instinctively fear or despise Orsted.

That last point is especially important. Orsted's curse makes ordinary cooperation extremely difficult. Rudeus can stand beside him, talk to him, negotiate with him, and eventually act as his representative without the same supernatural hostility controlling his judgment.

Rudeus also demonstrates something Orsted can trust: he is willing to go to extraordinary lengths for his family. Orsted treats the desperate attempt to protect his loved ones as evidence of a predictable motivation. Rudeus may be terrified, suspicious, and pragmatic, but his central priority is clear.

What Orsted Gives Rudeus in Return

Orsted does more than promise vague protection.

After accepting Rudeus, he heals the severe injuries left by their fight and gives him a bracelet that prevents Hitogami from observing him normally. That protection becomes strategically vital because Hitogami's ability to see and manipulate future developments is one of his greatest advantages.

Orsted also moves quickly to address Rudeus's biggest concern: the Greyrat household. He provides the means to summon a guardian beast with a powerful fate to protect the family. The summoned creature becomes Leo, the Sacred Beast associated with the Doldia.

Orsted still warns Rudeus not to become complacent. There is no magical guarantee that Hitogami can never devise another route to them.

That is what Rudeus agreed to: not perfect safety, but a much stronger defensive position than Hitogami's promise to behave if Rudeus murdered Orsted.

What Working for Orsted Means

Rudeus is not simply Orsted's personal bodyguard. His real job is to alter the future in ways that improve Orsted's chances of eventually defeating Hitogami.

Orsted possesses enormous knowledge about how people, kingdoms, conflicts, and important bloodlines normally develop. Rudeus becomes an active agent who can intervene in those events.

His assignments include protecting strategically important people, preventing useful individuals from dying prematurely, defeating Hitogami's apostles, building political relationships, and creating alliances that will matter decades later.

The first major example is Ariel. Orsted wants Ariel to become ruler of the Asura Kingdom, and Rudeus is assigned to help create that outcome. Seven Seas' Volume 17 synopsis frames the succession struggle as Rudeus carrying out Orsted's plan while Hitogami attempts to interfere.

Rudeus eventually spends years performing similar missions. The objective is not conquest for its own sake. Orsted is arranging the world so the right people are alive, the right alliances exist, and he has conserved as much of his own power as possible when the decisive stages of his struggle with Hitogami arrive.

When Does It Become the Orsted Corporation?

It is easy to compress the whole relationship into "Rudeus joins the Orsted Corporation," but the organization develops in phases.

The immediate post-battle agreement is simple. Rudeus becomes Orsted's subordinate and agrees to cooperate against Hitogami. Rudeus soon jokes about the relationship in corporate terms, with Orsted as the boss and himself as an employee.

The actual infrastructure comes later. Rudeus develops offices, recruits helpers, expands an intelligence and support network, and makes use of organizations such as the Rude Mercenary Company. His political connections also turn Orsted's previously isolated campaign into something resembling an international operation.

The forest agreement creates the partnership. The wider organization is something they build afterward.

Rudeus Serves Orsted for His Family First

Rudeus eventually develops genuine trust in Orsted, but that is the result of working together, not the reason he initially kneels.

His first motive stays intensely personal. Hitogami has demonstrated that he is willing to manipulate Rudeus's life and target his family. Rudeus cannot reach him. Killing Orsted fails. Orsted then offers another path: protection for the people Rudeus loves and a way to strike back at the person threatening them.

That is why Rudeus changes sides.

He does not suddenly become devoted to the Dragon God's mission. He makes a practical choice under extreme pressure, then discovers that Orsted is considerably more dependable than the terrifying enemy he once imagined.

What begins as "help me protect my family, and I will work for you" eventually becomes one of the most important partnerships in Mushoku Tensei.
