Why Does Everyone Forget Emilia in Re:Zero?
Gluttony steals Emilia's name in Re:Zero, making others forget her. Learn why Subaru remembers, how the tower loop resets, and whether her name returns.
Everyone forgets Emilia because Lye Batenkaitos eats her name with the Authority of Gluttony. The attack removes other people's memories of her. It does not make Emilia forget who she is. Subaru remains an exception: he can recognize her when Ram cannot.
That distinction makes the Watchtower scene so cruel. Emilia is still standing in front of her companions, fighting for them, but the relationship that should make her familiar has disappeared from their minds.

What Does Eating Emilia's Name Do?
Gluttony can attack a person's name or memories. Those are different losses, even though both can leave a group struggling to understand what happened.

Emilia's name is the target here. She keeps her personality, her goals, and her memories of the people around her. Ram, meanwhile, encounters a silver-haired woman she cannot place. Ram is not pretending, choosing to abandon Emilia, or suddenly deciding that their friendship meant nothing.
The official anime synopsis for Episode 80 likewise presents Ram confronting an unfamiliar silver-haired woman fighting Gluttony. The point is the mismatch between the person physically present and the memories everyone ought to have of her.

Why Does Subaru Still Remember Emilia?
Subaru's ability to remember people whose names Gluttony has eaten is an exception, but its underlying cause is not conclusively established in these scenes.
In the web novel's account, Subaru considers whether coming from another world could explain it. That is his hypothesis, not a confirmed rule that every otherworlder is immune. The scene also does not prove that love alone defeats Gluttony or that Return by Death automatically protects all his memories.
There is an especially easy mix-up at this point in the tower story: Subaru has his own missing memories. Remembering Emilia from his more recent experiences does not mean his older personal history has already returned. His recognition of her and how Subaru gets his memories back are connected problems, not the same recovery happening twice.
That is why his reaction matters. He has a point of reference the others have lost, and he can tell that their confusion is evidence of an attack rather than evidence that Emilia was never their companion.

Which Gluttony Sibling Is Responsible?
Lye Batenkaitos takes Emilia's name. Do not substitute Louis Arneb simply because Louis is central to Subaru's amnesia, or Roy Alphard because his encounter with Reid is happening in the same tower crisis.
The siblings create different problems:
- Lye is responsible for Emilia's stolen name in this sequence.
- Louis is central to the theft of Subaru's memories.
- Roy becomes the vessel in Reid's takeover.
Treating all three as one interchangeable villain hides the mechanism behind each scene. Emilia's situation is not Louis moving into her body, and it is not Reid erasing her existence.
Does Return by Death Undo This Incident?
The initial failed loop is reset. In the original web novel's sequence, Emilia stays to face the threat while Subaru tries to keep the others alive. By the time he learns that her name has been taken, the tower is already facing several disasters at once.
After Subaru dies, Return by Death takes him back to an earlier checkpoint. The theft in that failed attempt has not happened at that earlier point. Emilia has not been cured inside the abandoned version of events; Subaru has returned to a point before that version unfolded.
That difference matters whenever a Re:Zero answer says an event was "undone." A reset can prevent a loss from having occurred in the next attempt. It does not establish a general technique for reversing Gluttony while continuing in the same world.
Does Emilia Get Her Name Back Later?
Later Arc 6 web-novel spoilers: Emilia's name is taken again in a subsequent attempt, so the initial reset is not the whole answer to her eventual fate.
Following Ram's defeat of Lye, the later reunion establishes that Emilia's companions remember her again. She does not finish that version of the tower crisis permanently unknown to everyone around her.
The web novel also offers a possible explanation involving how recently the name was consumed and whether it had been fully digested. This is discussed as an explanation for the particular recovery, not a universal promise that killing any Gluttony user instantly restores every victim.
So the short answer has two parts: Gluttony causes the forgetting by stealing Emilia's name, and the tower storyline does not leave her permanently forgotten. Subaru's recognition, the failed-loop reset, and the later restoration are three distinct pieces of that story.
