Why Did Louis Arneb Steal Subaru's Memories?
Louis stole Subaru's memories to isolate his identity and seize Return by Death, but experiencing his repeated deaths shattered her plan and sense of self.
The theft was only the first step
Subaru really does have his memories stolen in Arc 6. The important correction is that Louis is not simply trying to erase him, learn his secrets, or feed on unusually rich experiences. Stealing his memories is the opening move in a larger attempt to acquire the power behind those experiences.
Subaru's memories reveal a life no ordinary person should possess: he has died, returned to an earlier point, and used knowledge from failed timelines to change later outcomes. To Louis, Return by Death looks like the ultimate tool for constructing a satisfying life. If an outcome is unacceptable, she imagines, the user can die, reset, and choose again.
That conclusion is understandable from a distance and disastrously incomplete. Louis sees the strategic value of Subaru's loops before she understands their psychological cost. Arc 6 makes that misunderstanding the reason her plan collapses.
What Louis's Gluttony can actually do
Louis is the third Sin Archbishop associated with Gluttony, alongside Lye Batenkaitos and Roy Alphard. Gluttony can consume a person's name, memories, or both. Those categories affect identity differently: losing memories can sever a victim from their own past, while losing a name can sever other people's recognition of that victim.
Arc 6 expands this beyond ordinary amnesia. The Pleiades Watchtower's Books of the Dead and the metaphysical Hall, or Corridor, of Memories connect identity to recorded lived experience. Louis exists there primarily as a soul rather than as an ordinary embodied girl, giving her unusual access to memories as something that can be consumed and manipulated.
Gluttony's Eclipse abilities also show that stolen lives are not merely records for reference. The Archbishops can reproduce aspects of people they have consumed. That makes Subaru especially dangerous prey, but it does not mean Louis can simply copy any Authority. Taking Return by Death requires a much more elaborate scheme.
Why Subaru is a uniquely valuable target
Subaru is valuable because his memories expose a power almost no outsider can properly understand. Return by Death gives him knowledge from timelines that everyone else has lost. Once Louis consumes his memories, she learns about deaths, resets, and repeated attempts that should be inaccessible to a normal observer.
There is another abnormal feature. Subaru does not become a blank person after the theft. He retains his life in Japan but loses the experiences accumulated after arriving in the other world. He therefore recognizes himself as Natsuki Subaru while lacking the emotional continuity behind the relationships, achievements, guilt, and growth that everyone at the Watchtower assumes he possesses.
The light novel does not turn this into a complete technical rule explaining every boundary of Gluttony and Od Lagna. What is confirmed is the result: Louis has separated Subaru from the part of his life that made him the person his companions know.
That makes him vulnerable to comparison with his own reputation. Emilia, Beatrice, Ram, Julius, and the others trust a Subaru he cannot remember being. To the amnesiac Subaru, "Natsuki Subaru" can begin to feel like an impossible predecessor rather than himself.
How the Hall of Memories makes the theft possible
The Hall of Memories is essential because it is not just another room in the Watchtower. It is a metaphysical domain tied to souls, memory, and the records represented by the Books of the Dead.
Within it, Louis can deal directly with Subaru's remembered identity. After consuming his other-world memories, she knows that his history contains repeated deaths and resets. The Hall is also treated as insulated enough that Louis can engage with knowledge of Return by Death without the usual punishment that prevents Subaru from freely disclosing the ability.
Louis therefore does not need Subaru to confess his secret. She has already consumed memories that reveal it.
For an illustrator, the key contrast is an amnesiac Subaru who looks physically unchanged and a white, abstract Hall where Louis handles broken pieces of his post-summoning life like consumable records.
Louis's real plan is to split Subaru from "Natsuki Subaru"
After learning about Return by Death, Louis tries to turn Subaru's amnesia into a deeper fracture. She divides herself so that one Louis remains associated with the Hall while another enters Subaru through the Gluttony Witch Factor.
The infiltrating Louis experiences events from within him and pushes at his unstable sense of self. Her objective is to make the amnesiac Subaru reject the pre-amnesia "Natsuki Subaru" as someone fundamentally separate. The Hall-side Louis can then exploit that division in another act of Gluttony aimed at what she actually wants: Return by Death.
This is more precise than saying Louis merely wants to "steal Subaru's existence." Memory theft creates the gap; psychological pressure is meant to widen it; Gluttony is supposed to profit from the separation. The possibility of retrying the scheme only makes Return by Death look even more attractive to her.
The plan also exposes Louis's central mistake. She treats identity as if it can be optimized by rearranging memories. Subaru's eventual answer is the opposite: the frightened newcomer, the failed versions, the heroic moments, and the person his friends love all belong to one continuous self.
What Louis experiences through Return by Death
At first, Louis understands Return by Death from consumed memories. The version of Louis inside Subaru later experiences his loops from the inside. That difference destroys her confidence.
From outside, Return by Death resembles an impossible advantage. Subaru gathers information, avoids dead ends, and eventually reaches outcomes that look miraculous to people who never saw the failed routes. Louis assumes the same power could guarantee the best possible life because unacceptable outcomes can be discarded.
But the death itself is never discarded for Subaru. He still feels the fear, pain, grief, and helplessness, and he alone carries memories of events the reset removed from everyone else's lives. The world rewinds; the person who suffered does not become untouched.
Once the infiltrating Louis shares those deaths, she becomes terrified of dying and of Subaru's capacity to continue after experiences she finds intolerable. What looked like a perfect retry mechanism becomes a nightmare.
This does not mean Subaru is immune to trauma. Re:Zero repeatedly shows the opposite. He survives through relationships, commitments, accumulated coping, and a stubborn willingness to continue. Louis wants the mechanism without possessing the human reasons that let Subaru bear it.
For an illustrator, Louis should not be watching a clean timeline diagram. She is inside the nightmare, recoiling as overlapping versions of Subaru die and reset around her while the emotional continuity of suffering remains.
Why Subaru's recovery makes Louis's plan backfire
Subaru does not recover because Louis simply relents and gives his memories back. He encounters records of his own dead selves through the Books of the Dead and re-experiences the life and deaths of the Subaru who existed before the theft.
The decisive change is psychological as well as informational. Amnesiac Subaru stops treating "Natsuki Subaru" as an impossible predecessor he must imitate. He accepts the feared, failed, loved, and successful versions as himself.
That reintegration destroys the identity fracture Louis needed. Once Subaru recognizes that continuity, the Louis inside him becomes a foreign element rather than the wedge controlling the split, and she is forced back out without successfully taking Return by Death.
The failure then turns inward. The Louis who personally experienced Subaru's deaths is desperate never to die again, while the Louis who did not endure those loops can still see Return by Death as a path to an ideal life. The two versions no longer agree about the power they were trying to steal.
That reversal is confirmed story logic. The broader thematic reading is interpretation: Gluttony assumes a person can be reduced to consumable experiences, but Louis can acquire the record of Subaru's suffering without automatically inheriting the relationships and choices that taught him how to carry it. She tries to fracture Subaru and instead creates a fracture within herself.
Light-novel canon versus the 2026 anime
The explanation above follows the light novel, where Arc 6 is complete. Yen Press's English releases place Subaru's amnesia across Volumes 23 through 25, with Volume 25 containing the climax that exposes Louis's role and resolves the central identity conflict. The web novel contains the same broad framework and can help trace the story's development, but it is an earlier draft continuity and should not override the published light novel where details differ.
As of August 16, 2026, the television anime has already entered this material. Season 4 has shown Subaru awakening without his post-summoning memories, surviving the Watchtower's lethal situation, reading Books of the Dead, and resolving to recover both his own memories and Rem's. The official anime site identifies the Season 4 stretch through episode 77 as the "Loss Arc,"while the"Recapture Arc" began on August 12, 2026.
