Cor Leonis is Subaru's version of the Authority of Greed

Subaru gains the Greed Witch Factor after Regulus Corneas is defeated in Priestella. The factor does not immediately give him a copy of Regulus's combat ability. During Arc 6, after Subaru's identity and memories have been put through extreme pressure at the Pleiades Watchtower, the Greed factor manifests as an Authority suited to Subaru himself: Cor Leonis.

The name means "Heart of the Lion" and deliberately echoes the symbolism surrounding Regulus. That connection should not be mistaken for identical mechanics. In Re:Zero, an Authority is shaped by the person using the Witch Factor, so two holders of Greed can express it very differently.

For Subaru, Cor Leonis is fundamentally a power of connection. When active, it lets him perceive allies as pale points or lights and gain a rough sense of where they are and how they are doing. More importantly, Subaru can shoulder the burdens interfering with those allies, allowing them to move or fight more effectively while he suffers the transferred strain.

Ram provides the clearest early example. Subaru uses Cor Leonis to take on part of the debilitating burden that normally limits her hornless body. Ram can then access far more of her combat ability, while Subaru becomes exhausted, nauseated, unsteady, and physically distressed.

This is not a free buff. Somebody still pays the cost.

"First Shift" is useful shorthand, but the naming needs a caveat

Cor Leonis is often described in reference material as having a First Shift and Second Shift. The distinction is useful, but the terminology is not completely symmetrical in the source.

The late Arc 6 text explicitly names Cor Leonis, Second Shift, also described as the "Division of Labor."By contrast, the original baseline function is introduced simply as Cor Leonis rather than being ceremonially announced as"First Shift"in the same way. Calling that initial mode"First Shift" is therefore best treated as convenient fandom or reference terminology for the first stage of the Authority.

Using that shorthand, First Shift has two closely related functions. Subaru can locate qualifying allies through the Authority's network, and he can take their burdens onto himself.

The sensing component is not full telepathy. Subaru does not automatically hear thoughts or receive a detailed status screen. Instead, the lights give him positional information and changes in their intensity or warmth can help him infer an ally's condition. At the Watchtower, that makes Cor Leonis extremely valuable for coordinating people who are separated across floors and facing different threats.

The burden-taking component is even more important. Subaru can adjust how much strain he accepts rather than treating the power as a simple all-or-nothing switch. That flexibility becomes essential once several companions are in danger at the same time.

What counts as a "burden" under Cor Leonis?

Cor Leonis can relieve more than ordinary tiredness. Arc 6 shows Subaru taking on fatigue, pain, bodily stress, and the functional burden caused by injuries. The recipient can consequently keep moving at a level that would otherwise be difficult or impossible.

The important limitation is that Cor Leonis is not conventional healing.

When Meili is badly injured during the Watchtower crisis, Subaru uses the Authority to shoulder enough of her burden to keep her from being overwhelmed. He experiences severe feedback himself, including pain and symptoms that mimic physical damage. Yet Meili's actual wound still requires Beatrice's healing magic. Cor Leonis reduces what the injured person has to bear; it does not simply erase the underlying injury from existence.

That distinction also prevents a common misunderstanding about Ram. Cor Leonis does not restore Ram's missing horn. It temporarily takes on the burden produced by her condition, which allows Ram to perform much closer to her true potential. Subaru pays for that relief with his own stamina and well-being.

The Authority can therefore create dramatic battlefield gains without generating energy from nowhere. If Subaru makes a stronger ally functional by absorbing their limitations, the cost has merely moved to a physically weaker person.

That is why his instinct to shoulder everything personally is dangerous.

Second Shift lets Subaru divide the burden

Cor Leonis evolves at a moment when Subaru's first approach becomes unsustainable. He is already carrying Ram's strain when Meili suffers a near-fatal injury, forcing him to reduce what he is taking from Ram so he can prioritize Meili. The problem is obvious: Subaru may be able to connect everyone, but his own body is still the bottleneck.

Beatrice challenges the assumption that he must carry the entire group alone.

Subaru responds by activating Cor Leonis, Second Shift: Division of Labor. Instead of every transferred burden terminating in Subaru, he can distribute part of that load to other qualifying allies. Beatrice becomes the crucial first partner in this upgraded use, accepting part of what Subaru is carrying so the group can continue functioning.

Second Shift does not make the cost disappear. It changes the structure from one person carrying everyone to a network in which willing companions share what would crush an individual.

Subaru can regulate the division rather than splitting everything evenly. That matters because different allies have different capacities, and because some burdens remain more urgent than others. Later uses reinforce that Cor Leonis is about managing a shared load, not simply pushing damage onto whoever happens to be nearby.

Mutual trust is part of the Authority's mechanics

Cor Leonis is unusually dependent on relationships. Subaru cannot designate any random person as an "ally" and begin manipulating their suffering.

Arc 6 makes the condition clearest when Subaru considers whether he can force part of his burden onto the rampaging transformed Shaula. He cannot. Although Cor Leonis can still register her presence, she is not in a state of willingly supporting the "little king" in the way required for Division of Labor. Second Shift depends on the recipient's willingness to help carry Subaru and the group.

Later material reinforces that the connection is effectively two-sided. Subaru's feelings alone are not enough to make every person appear in the network. Someone who does not recognize Subaru as an ally may fail to register, while a person Subaru himself refuses to regard as an ally may also remain outside it.

That makes "emotional trust" a useful description, but it should not be turned into a rigid romance or friendship meter. Cor Leonis responds to an ally relationship and a willingness to support. The novels do not provide a numerical threshold for affection.

This requirement is also the clearest moral contrast with Regulus. Subaru's strongest form of Greed works better when other people choose to share his burden. It cannot simply be imposed on unwilling victims.

How Cor Leonis differs from Regulus's Authority of Greed

Regulus's Authority is divided into abilities Subaru identifies as Lion's Heart and Little King.

Lion's Heart allows Regulus to stop the time of his own body and things affected by his power. Because his stopped state is effectively insulated from ordinary physical interference, the result gives him extraordinary defense and lets otherwise trivial objects become devastating attacks. Without support from Little King, however, Lion's Heart has a severe time limit.

Little King circumvents that weakness by linking Regulus to the hearts of women he treats as the subjects of his private kingdom - his wives. Their hearts sustain the arrangement while his own heart is stopped, allowing him to maintain the invulnerable state far longer than he could alone.

Subaru's Cor Leonis is almost an inversion.

Regulus uses other people as infrastructure so that he does not have to suffer ordinary limits. Subaru initially makes himself the destination for other people's suffering. Then Second Shift forces him to learn the healthier lesson that his companions can willingly carry some of the weight too.

That thematic inversion is interpretation rather than a separately stated rule of the magic system, but it closely follows how the two Authorities function. Regulus's Greed is possessive and unilateral; Subaru's is cooperative and increasingly reciprocal.

Most importantly, Cor Leonis does not inherit Lion's Heart's time stop. Subaru cannot freeze his body in time, ignore physical laws, or gain Regulus-style invulnerability through Cor Leonis.

Cor Leonis has serious limits

The Authority is powerful because Subaru fights alongside people far stronger than he is, but its restrictions stop it from becoming an automatic solution.

First, Subaru remains vulnerable to the burden he accepts. Taking exhaustion or injury-related strain from a powerhouse like Ram can leave him barely functional. If he mismanages the load, Cor Leonis can turn the person coordinating the battlefield into the group's weakest point.

Second, it does not repair physical damage by itself. A wounded ally may feel less pain or remain able to act, but healing can still be necessary.

Third, its targets are relationship-dependent. It is not a universal radar for every living person and it is not a weapon for dumping agony onto enemies.

Fourth, Second Shift requires willing support. Subaru cannot treat his companions the way Regulus treated his wives and still obtain the same cooperative effect.

Fifth, the sensing function is approximate. Cor Leonis gives position and condition cues, not detailed thoughts, memories, or perfect knowledge of what each person sees.

The series also avoids giving the ability a simple, universally stated maximum range in Arc 6. It works impressively across the Pleiades Watchtower and its surrounding battle, but claiming a precise distance would go beyond what that arc establishes.

Finally, Cor Leonis is not an extension of Return by Death. It does not transfer Subaru's looping ability, checkpoints, memories of failed timelines, or the consequences of death to his allies.

Where Cor Leonis stands in the light novel, web novel, and anime

The published light novel is the main canon baseline for this explanation. Cor Leonis develops during the closing portion of Arc 6, with the English release of Volume 25 covering the arc's climax. The original Japanese web novel contains the same core development and makes mechanics such as "Second Shift" and the division of burdens especially explicit, although wording and scene construction can differ between web and published versions.

For anime viewers, the timing needs a current caveat. As of August 16, 2026, Re:Zero Season 4 is adapting Arc 6, and the officially designated Recapture Arc began broadcasting on August 12. The anime has not yet reached Subaru's late-Arc 6 awakening and full use of Cor Leonis.

Because the official production has not announced the exact episode in which Cor Leonis will debut, any specific episode prediction would be speculation. Given its position in the source story, it belongs later in the Recapture Arc, but the anime can compress, rearrange, or expand material.

What is already established in source canon is the nature of the power itself. Cor Leonis turns Subaru's Greed into a system built around allies: he can find them, carry what is stopping them, and eventually let willing companions carry part of that weight with him. Its strength is not that Subaru becomes untouchable like Regulus. It is that a character who repeatedly tries to suffer alone finally gains an Authority that works best when he does not.
