You definitely don’t need a wiki to see who the best waifu of 2022 is, aka Yor Forger (ヨル・フォージャー, Yoru Fōjā), née Briar (ブライア, Buraia) from Spy X Family. Cute but deadly, she’s somehow a caring mother on the main, and then a lethal assassin on the down low. And with her adorable bumbling personality and dynamic, it’s no wonder she has skyrocketed as a fan favorite in the anime series. And thanks to the 2nd season of Spy X Family airing in the Fall of last year, her influence has only grown.
Yor Forger may not be fully unconventional for the premium waifu character, but she certainly is a divergence from the usual tropes we see associated with the character archetype. But to me, I think the aspect that truly sets her apart is how she’s one of the few female characters in mainstream anime that isn’t underage. In fact, Yor is 27, a full-fledged adult who has already had experience being a parental figure to her sibling, Yuri Briar. In Spy X Family, she plays a similar role, acting as a loving mother and wife in a typical nuclear family.
Except, nobody in her tiny family is what they seem. And that’s the charm of Spy X Family, where each character is hiding their reality from the other, only to find solace in each other without being colored by their past. This matters to Yor specifically, because of her rather precarious job. But also, because it just goes to show you that you could learn to care about someone, without needing their entire origin story. With Yor, we learn that she isn’t just some hardcore killer, but rather a multi-faceted person with fears and hopes, that are relatively humane, all things considered.
And of course, we can’t just stagnate her character by dubbing it as the ideal waifu! Because Yor Forger is definitely more than that in Spy X Family! Yor’s personality is just as endearing to fans as her appearance. As ruthless as she can be while doing missions, she’s also strangely earnest and naïve in her day-to-day life. So, let’s break down Yor Forger’s character!
I’m sorry to have bothered you… But could I choke the life out your body, Mister?

Who is Yor Forger?
So, let’s discuss who Yor Forger is. Before she got married, Yor was Yor Briar, a single woman working as a secretary at Berlint City Hall. But that job is merely a coverup for her real work as the illusive “Thorn Princess” (〈いばら姫〉, <Ibara-hime>), an assassin under the Garden group from Ostania.
Yor was living a life of solitude, especially after her brother Yuri left to become a part of the Secret Police. It didn’t help that her wildly different lifestyle made her feel alienated from her normal co-workers at her day job. So, the loneliness that came from that was something she grew accustomed to. However, the problem was that an unmarried woman in Berlint was seen as suspicious.
So, it was sheer luck that Loid Forger, a psychologist, stumbled upon her and they got married out of convenience. Of course, Yor being Yor, never questioned how her husband proposed to her, nor the circumstances around it. In hindsight, she was probably happy to both get off the radar of being a spy and no longer live alone. But also, it’s funny because just like how she was hiding her real occupation, Loid hid his profession as Twilight, the best spy at WISE (Westalis Intelligence).
Then again, Yor is known for a lot of things, but her perception and intuitiveness aren’t one of them. Like, don’t get me wrong, the Thorn Princess is scary coolin Spy X Family. Yor Forger, on the other hand, is not. She has very few social skills, often coming off as slightly out of depth in most situations. And honestly, for an assassin, she is pretty gullible, taking everything Loid says at face value and not thinking too much about things.
And despite her being such a cold-blooded killer, she is polite, apologetic even. Her kindness is one of her most endearing attributes, with a sincerity that even Loid can’t falter. And this translates into her genuinely trying her best to be a wife to Loid, and a doting mother to Anya Forger.

Spy X Family: Love Grows Where Yor Goes!
Look, the story of Spy X Family is simple when you get down to it. It isn’t about government conspiracies or warring nations. Or well, that isn’t all it’s about. At its core, Spy X Family is about a found family in the strangest of situations. It’s about 3 individuals that were lost in the world, that didn’t quite fit in. Only for them to come together under the guise of a mission through Loid, eventually finding a home in one another.
And in that family, Yor plays the maternal role quite well. Because even before Yor became the Thorn Princess, she was used to taking care of her brother. Their parents died when they were very young, so the responsibility of raising Yuri fell on Yor. That’s a lot of obligation over a child, especially in a country that was war-torn at the time. But that’s also where we see Yor getting a lot of her internal strength. She is sweet and kind, showing responsibility when taking care of Anya and even Bond, their dog.
Her experiences growing up instilled in her very motherly instincts, where she often gets overprotective of Anya. And you would think she is cold, that she wouldn’t be a family person. But it’s the opposite. Yor is just so utterly earnest that she makes all the effort in being a support to her family, even if it is a sham. Somewhere along the way, she loses that aloofness to her, becoming much more expressive and honest with her love.
I think that’s the best way you can describe Yor Forger in Spy X Family, as an unknowingly honest individual who might not be conventional in the way she acts. But she tries so hard to make both Loid and Anya happy, without an ulterior motive.
The Thorn Princess Is Unreal!
Of course, just because she’s a little naïve, doesn’t mean that Yor Forger isn’t still one of the most frighteningly powerful individuals in Spy X Family. Because if Loid is known for his incredible intellect and adaptability, Yor is known for her deadly precision and sheer force.
Her strength is nearly inhumane, being able to crush entire skulls with her weapons or throw a ball with the intensity to level entire trees. But she also has a hard time controlling that strength, considering how she unknowingly ends up suffocating the people she hugs or when she sliced up the cutting board while prepping the vegetables. I mean, even Loid has commented on that overwhelming muscle, when he got knocked out by a single kick from her.
Her durability is also insane, being able to stand being shot and still taking down 22 assassins alone. Which, yeah, of course, she could. The woman is highly trained in combat, keeping up with Loid when it came to agility and reflexes. She only faltered during their fight because she was intoxicated at the time.
Whereas she might be kind of clueless as Yor, Thorn Princess is much more astute. When it comes to her job, she has the sharpness of a whip. She has impressive awareness of her surroundings and even knowledge about the human body and its many weaknesses. I mean, she wouldn’t be such an illustrious assassin if she didn’t have the smarts to back it up. But maybe her intelligence is a little more situational than anything.
