Why Does Nacht Have Four Devils?

Nacht Faust has four devils because he successfully bound Gimodelo, Slotos, Plumede, and Walgner through the forbidden devil-binding practices of the Faust family. Each contract gives the Black Bulls' vice-captain access to a different ability and Devil Union form, complementing his natural Shadow Magic. Although Nacht controls four devils, Black Clover never establishes four as the maximum number a devil host can possess.

Manga spoilers: This article covers Nacht's family history and the Spade Kingdom raid.

How Did Nacht Get Four Devils?

Nacht's unusual relationship with devils begins with House Faust, a noble family secretly devoted to studying forbidden magic and devil-binding rituals.

Unlike his twin brother Morgen, who became a Magic Knight, Nacht initially wanted nothing to do with protecting the Clover Kingdom. He preferred living recklessly, spending time with Yami Sukehiro and rejecting Morgen's invitations to join the Magic Knights.

That changed when Nacht's parents revealed their family's hidden activities.

Nacht's Shadow Magic made him particularly valuable to House Faust's research. His parents introduced him to the secret chamber beneath their estate, where the family conducted rituals involving devils.

Nacht embraced this forbidden practice and proved exceptionally talented at it. He successfully bound four mid-ranking devils and learned to use their powers.

Those devils were Gimodelo, Slotos, Plumede, and Walgner.

The important distinction is that Nacht's four devils came from successful bindings, not from a single mysterious devil that divided itself into four creatures.

His family possessed the knowledge needed to conduct the rituals, and Nacht had the magical ability to take advantage of that knowledge.

How the Devil-Binding Ritual Works

The devil-binding ritual is a forbidden technique that allows a human to establish a contract with a devil.

As Nacht explains while training Asta, the ritual requires something connected to the devil. This object provides the link needed to summon the devil for the confrontation.

The human must then overcome the summoned devil to gain the opportunity to establish a contract.

Nacht's four successfully bound devils serve him, and he carries relics connected to them. These relics help him summon the devils into the human world, where they can appear as small familiars or larger masked creatures.

Asta's experience provides an important contrast. After defeating Liebe, he rejects Nacht's suggestion of subjugation and establishes a contract between equals instead.

The two arrangements demonstrate that devil contracts can differ in their terms. That difference also helps explain the distinction between ordinary devil power and the deeper connection explored in Black Asta vs. Devil Union.

Nacht's Four Devils and Their Abilities

Each devil contributes a recognizable specialty to Nacht's fighting style.

Devil Animal theme Devil Union form Signature ability
Gimodelo Dog Canis Pack: Creates multiple shadow copies of Nacht
Slotos Horse-like Equus Toughness: Greatly improves physical resilience
Plumede Cat Felis Agility: Enhances speed and evasive movement
Walgner Rooster Gallus Call: Produces a crow that briefly paralyzes listeners

The animal-themed forms are more than cosmetic transformations. Each provides a specific tactical advantage.

Gimodelo: Overwhelming Enemies With Numbers

Gimodelo is the most prominent of Nacht's four devils, particularly during Asta's training.

In Devil Union Mode: Canis, Nacht can use Gimodelo's Pack characteristic to create shadow duplicates of himself.

These copies allow him to attack from multiple directions and pressure enemies who would otherwise be able to focus on a single opponent.

During Asta and Liebe's training, this ability forces Asta to deal with several attackers sharing Nacht's ki signature.

Slotos: Surviving Extreme Pressure

Slotos provides the defensive characteristic known as Toughness.

Devil Union Mode: Equus covers Nacht in heavy-looking shadow armor and greatly improves his ability to withstand physical pressure.

Its usefulness becomes clear during the confrontation with Dante Zogratis.

Dante's Gravity Magic creates conditions that would severely restrict an ordinary fighter. By using Equus, Nacht can withstand the increased gravity and continue moving, helping Jack the Ripper maintain the fight.

Slotos does not make Nacht invulnerable. The form provides resilience, not immunity to every attack.

Plumede: Speed and Evasion

Plumede's characteristic, Agility, makes Devil Union Mode: Felis especially useful when Nacht needs to avoid attacks.

The cat-themed transformation emphasizes speed and evasive movement rather than heavy protection.

Nacht demonstrates this advantage when confronting the supreme devils Lilith and Nahamah during the Spade Kingdom raid.

Plumede's assistance also supports Nacht's reconnaissance through shadows, fitting his established role as a spy.

Walgner: Disrupting Opponents

Walgner's Devil Union Mode: Gallus has a particularly useful disabling ability.

Its characteristic, Call, produces a powerful rooster-like crow that can momentarily paralyze those who hear it.

Against Lilith and Nahamah, Nacht uses this brief interruption to create an opening and move the devils away from the other combatants.

That makes Walgner valuable for controlling a confrontation rather than simply dealing damage.

Shadow Magic Is Nacht's Own Power

One common misunderstanding is that Nacht's devils are the source of his Shadow Magic.

They are not.

Shadow Magic is Nacht's natural magic attribute. His family's interest in him was partly connected to that ability, long before the four contracts became part of his fighting style.

With Shadow Magic, Nacht can manipulate shadows, travel through them, restrain opponents, and create techniques that control the battlefield.

His spells include Dark Garden Invitation, Shadow Corridor, and Dark Prison Hunting Ground.

The devils strengthen and expand what Nacht can accomplish with those foundations.

Devil Union allows him to assimilate a devil's power into his body, producing a transformation with that devil's characteristic abilities.

Gimodelo does not grant an entirely separate dog-based magic attribute, for example. Rather, his Pack characteristic works alongside Nacht's Shadow Magic to produce the shadow copies seen in battle.

The same principle applies to the other three devils.

Why Having Four Devils Makes Nacht So Versatile

The advantage of four contracts is not simply having more magical power available.

Nacht can choose abilities according to the situation.

Canis helps him surround opponents. Equus offers protection against overwhelming physical pressure. Felis emphasizes evasion, while Gallus creates opportunities to interrupt an enemy's movements.

He can also combine devils in more advanced transformations.

During the confrontation with Lilith and Nahamah, Nacht uses Devil Union Mode: Gallus × Felis, combining Walgner and Plumede.

This combination allows him to intensify his Shadow Magic and attempt Monument of Atonement, a technique intended to imprison the supreme devils alongside himself.

However, Lilith and Nahamah break through the technique, demonstrating that combining devil powers does not guarantee victory.

Nacht also uses Canis × Equus against Lucifero, employing shadow-based restraints in an attempt to hold the enemy down.

These combinations show that his contracts are not merely four interchangeable sources of strength. Their distinct abilities give Nacht different ways to respond to dangerous opponents.

Even so, the four devils are mid-ranking. Their combined utility should not be confused with automatic superiority over supreme devils.

Why Isn't Lucifugus Nacht's Fifth Devil?

Lucifugus is central to Nacht's past, but he is not one of Nacht's four successfully contracted devils.

After the four successful bindings, Nacht's father gave him a bracelet connected to Lucifugus. Nacht attempted another ritual, but the supreme devil's power overwhelmed him and killed members of the Faust household. Morgen destroyed the bracelet to stop the summoning and died saving his brother.

Nacht never successfully contracted Lucifugus. The encounter was a failed attempt to bind another devil, not proof that Nacht once possessed five.

The failed summoning explains both what happened to Nacht's brother and much of his guilt afterward.

What the Four Contracts Reveal About Nacht

The contracts began as Nacht's pursuit of forbidden power, but his devils eventually help him protect others. Plumede and Walgner willingly support his dangerous stand against the supreme twins. Their responses suggest trust beyond the original binding arrangement, even while Nacht struggles to forgive himself.

His grief also contributes to his complicated relationship with Yami, whose friendship with Morgen connects directly to the life Nacht lost. Those feelings are explored further in why Nacht hates Yami.

The story does not establish a universal four-contract limit or explain that Nacht needed exactly four. Four is the number he successfully bound. His advantage comes from using their different characteristics intelligently, not from a rule that four devils automatically beat one.
