What Happened to Nacht's Brother in Black Clover?
Morgen Faust died stopping Nacht's forbidden Lucifugus ritual in Black Clover. Here's how the tragedy shaped Nacht and what happened when Morgen returned.

Morgen Faust, Nacht Faust's younger twin brother, died saving Nacht from a forbidden devil-summoning ritual. Nacht tried to bind the powerful devil Lucifugus, but the summoning turned disastrous. Morgen destroyed the object sustaining the ritual and sent the devil back to the underworld, losing his life in the process. The story takes another painful turn when Morgen is later resurrected as a Paladin under Lucius Zogratis.
Manga spoilers: This article covers the Faust brothers' past and Morgen's Paladin storyline.
Who Was Morgen Faust?
Morgen and Nacht were twins born into the noble Faust family, but their personalities could hardly have been more different. Morgen was warm, selfless, and gifted with Light Magic. Nacht, the older twin, used Shadow Magic and spent his youth pursuing whatever amused him.
Morgen joined the Grey Deer Magic Knight squad and partnered with Yami Sukehiro, whose Dark Magic complemented his Light Magic. Nacht was friends with Yami too, but unlike them, he rejected life as a Magic Knight.
Morgen repeatedly urged Nacht to join, believing his brother's talent could save people. Nacht refused. Crucially, Morgen never stopped believing Nacht was capable of good.
How Did Nacht's Brother Die?
The secret beneath the Faust estate
The Faust family secretly researched devils and practiced forbidden summoning rituals. Nacht's parents brought him to a hidden chamber beneath their estate, explaining that his Shadow Magic suited their traditions.
For someone so often overshadowed by Morgen, being chosen felt exhilarating. Nacht studied devil-binding magic and successfully contracted with four devils, the companions whose powers he later uses as Black Bulls vice-captain. See why Nacht has four devils for that side of his story.
Confident in his success, Nacht accepted his father's plan to bind Lucifugus, one of the underworld's highest-ranking devils, using a special bracelet linked to it.
Morgen tried to stop Lucifugus
Morgen discovered the plan and entered the chamber to stop his twin. He warned Nacht that the ritual was too dangerous, but Nacht refused to abandon it.
The summoning proved beyond Nacht's control. Lucifugus's power killed the other Faust family members present, leaving Nacht frozen by fear. Morgen rushed into the magic circle and broke the bracelet linked to Lucifugus.
This canceled the summoning and returned the devil to the underworld. Nacht survived, but Morgen died in his brother's arms.
Morgen explained that he had not reported his family's forbidden activities to the Magic Knights because he dreamed of protecting the Clover Kingdom alongside Nacht, as partners using Light and Shadow Magic.
Even while trying to stop Nacht's mistake, Morgen had never given up on the future they might share.
Was the devil Lucifugus or Lucifero?
It was Lucifugus. The names are similar, but they belong to different devils in Black Clover. Lucifero is associated with Gravity Magic and the Spade Kingdom conflict. The devil Nacht attempted to summon in the Faust family's ritual was Lucifugus.
This distinction becomes especially important when Morgen returns later in the manga.

Did Nacht Kill Morgen?
Nacht did not deliberately murder Morgen. He did make the reckless decision that led to his death.
Nacht attempted the forbidden summoning despite Morgen's warning. Lucifugus attacked the family, and Morgen intervened to save his brother. It is fair to say Nacht caused the dangerous circumstances, but not that he intentionally killed Morgen.
Nacht finds that distinction almost impossible to accept. He sees his ambition and selfishness as the reasons his family died. His guilt is real, but his self-condemnation is not evidence that he wanted Morgen dead.
How Morgen's Death Changed Nacht
Morgen's death transformed Nacht's purpose. Instead of chasing forbidden power for himself, he devoted his abilities to stopping people who harm others.
In Chapter 287, Yami visits Nacht at Morgen's grave and speaks of making him vice-captain of a squad he plans to form. Nacht eventually takes that role in the Black Bulls, but does not try to become Morgen. He chooses to fight from the shadows, convinced he does not deserve praise.
His years as a spy and his uncompromising attitude follow from that decision. Ironically, the work becomes a way of pursuing Morgen's hope that Nacht would use his talent to protect people.
Yami's friendship with both twins complicates the aftermath. That is explored further in why Nacht hates Yami; Morgen's story is about more than the tension between those two survivors.
Does Morgen Come Back to Life?
Yes, but not as an ordinary, freely returned Magic Knight. Lucius Zogratis resurrects Morgen and transforms him into a Paladin serving his vision of a remade world.
In Chapter 354, Morgen appears alongside Lucius, attacks Jack the Ripper, and confronts Yami. His face and Light Magic are familiar, but he is fighting for Lucius.
More disturbingly, Paladin Morgen possesses Lucifugus's power. Alongside his own Light Magic, he can use Dark Magic through the very devil involved in his death.
This does not mean the original ritual secretly succeeded. Nacht's summoning failed when Morgen broke the bracelet. The Paladin transformation is a separate act performed by Lucius.

Nacht faces his brother a second time
In Chapters 374-376, Nacht faces the brother he has spent years mourning. Yami and his sister Ichika also fight the Paladin. Nacht initially struggles to strike Morgen's revived form, even though he knows the threat must be stopped.
The three combine their magic to create an opening, and Nacht strikes down Paladin Morgen in Chapter 376. Chapter 377 confirms his defeat.
Their battle is not a happy reunion. To protect others, Nacht must stop someone who bears his brother's face and power. The victory does not erase the first loss.
What Morgen's Story Really Means for Nacht
Morgen's original dream was to stand beside Nacht and protect others. Lucius later twists that hope into the Paladin's invitation for Nacht and Yami to fight on his side.
One interpretation of Nacht's journey is that he honors his brother not by escaping guilt, but by acting on the values Morgen saw in him. Protecting people becomes more important than clinging to a magically revived version of the person he lost.
Morgen dies saving Nacht from Lucifugus, then returns as an enemy through Lucius's power and is defeated. Through both tragedies, his faith in Nacht remains the thread connecting the selfish young mage to the protector he becomes.
