Why Does Asta Have No Magic?
Asta has no magic because Licita's condition drained his magic before birth. Here is how that fits the Witch Queen, Liebe, Anti-Magic, and his grimoire.
Asta has no magic because his mother Licita's abnormal condition drained his magical power while he was still in the womb. The official Complete Grimoire clarifies the causal link that the manga left partly implicit: Asta lost the magic that would normally dwell in a person before birth, while his life force remained. He survived, but he was born completely magicless.
That also resolves an apparent contradiction. In Chapter 97, the Witch Queen describes Asta as the product of a "sudden mutation" that prevented mana from dwelling in him. Later, Licita is revealed to involuntarily drain magical power and life force from nearby beings. Complete Grimoire connects those ideas: the Witch Queen correctly identified Asta's abnormal magicless state, while the guidebook supplies the missing prenatal cause.
Asta therefore does not have a hidden magic attribute. Anti-Magic is not his secret magic, either. Anti-Magic comes from Liebe, the devil inside the five-leaf grimoire, and Asta can use it precisely because he has no magic of his own.
What the Manga Establishes First
Black Clover makes Asta's condition central from Chapter 1. He lives in a society where magic shapes status and combat ability, yet he cannot cast even a basic spell. At the grimoire ceremony, Yuno receives a four-leaf grimoire while Asta initially receives nothing.
The five-leaf grimoire appears when Asta refuses to give up during Revchi's attack. It gives him access to swords that can cut through or negate magic, but it does not give him normal spellcasting. His basic condition remains unchanged: he has no magical power of his own.
Chapter 97 makes that explicit during the Witch's Forest battle. After the Witch Queen forces more of the black power through Asta's body, she examines what he is and concludes that mana does not dwell in him. She treats that as an abnormality, not evidence of some prestigious magical bloodline.
Her point is functional as well as biological. Asta's body can carry a force that would be hostile to an ordinary mage because there is no native magical power inside him for that force to negate.
Licita Explains Where Asta's Magic Went
Volume 27 reveals the history of Liebe and Licita. Licita is Asta's mother, and she has a dangerous condition that involuntarily takes magical power and life force from living beings around her. Official Black Clover character material states that trait directly.
Her condition also explains why Liebe can stay near her. Liebe is a devil, but he was born with no magical power. After reaching the human world, he can live beside Licita without suffering the same effect as an ordinary magical being. She takes him in and treats him as her son.
That creates a deliberate parallel between Asta and Liebe. Both begin life without magic. Both are treated as inferior because of it. Both become connected through Licita and the same five-leaf grimoire.
Complete Grimoire closes the remaining gap in Asta's case: Licita's condition affected him before birth and drained his magic in the womb. His life force remained, allowing him to survive. The guidebook does not require a secret inherited spell, an intentional ritual, or a named father to explain his magiclessness.
Before the guidebook, readers could reasonably infer that Licita's condition and Asta's lack of magic were connected. After Complete Grimoire, that connection is no longer just inference.

How the Witch Queen's "Mutation" Line Fits
The Witch Queen's wording can sound like a different explanation because she says a sudden mutation kept mana from dwelling in Asta.
The cleaner reading after Complete Grimoire is that she is describing Asta's resulting condition, not recounting the full history of his pregnancy. From her perspective, he is a human body in which magical power does not reside. She does not have Licita's backstory when she makes that observation.
The canon therefore fits together in three steps:
- Chapter 97 identifies the result: Asta is an abnormal human with no magical power dwelling in him.
- Volume 27 establishes Licita's condition: she drains magical power and life force.
- Complete Grimoire identifies the prenatal cause: Licita's condition drained Asta's magic in the womb while his life force remained.
The guidebook adds specificity rather than replacing the Witch Queen's diagnosis.
Magic, Mana, Anti-Magic, and Devil Power Are Different Things
Asta becomes confusing if every supernatural ability is simply called "magic." Black Clover separates several concepts that overlap in combat but are not interchangeable.

Calling Anti-Magic "Asta's magic" is therefore convenient shorthand, but technically inaccurate. It fills the role that magic fills for other fighters while coming from a different source and doing the opposite job.
Liebe is the clearest proof. Official material identifies him as the Anti-Magic devil and also states that he was born without magical power. Anti-Magic is not simply an unusual elemental attribute that Asta secretly inherited.
Why Asta Can Use Liebe's Anti-Magic
Asta's greatest disadvantage creates the compatibility his fighting style needs.
The swords tied to his grimoire become saturated with Anti-Magic. For a normal mage, a power that erases magical energy is a poor match for a body and fighting style built around magical power. Asta has no magical reserve for Anti-Magic to cancel inside him.
That is what the Witch Queen recognizes in Chapter 97. His lack of magic allows Anti-Magic to flow through his body.
Magiclessness alone, however, does not make him strong. Asta's physical training is essential. The Demon-Slayer Sword is huge, and he develops the strength, speed, reflexes, and endurance needed to use it effectively. His muscles are not a visual joke; they are part of the mechanical reason his build works.
Liebe is equally essential because Liebe is the source of Anti-Magic. As their relationship develops, Asta gains better access to that power, progressing from partial black transformations to more complete cooperation and Devil Union.
The grimoire is the third part. It is the five-leaf grimoire that was once Licht's four-leaf grimoire, carries the sword legacy associated with Licht, and becomes the vessel in which Liebe is sealed. It is not a reserve of Asta's own mana.
In simple terms: Liebe supplies Anti-Magic, the grimoire and swords give that power a medium, and Asta's magicless body plus physical training make it usable in battle.
Asta Does Not Secretly Have Sword Magic
The swords themselves can create another misunderstanding. Licht, the elf leader, used Sword Magic, and the weapons in Asta's grimoire come from that legacy.
That does not make Sword Magic Asta's hidden attribute.
Asta does not recreate Licht's spellcasting through his own mana. He physically wields the swords while Anti-Magic runs through them. Their history explains where the weapons come from; Liebe explains their Anti-Magic; Asta's body explains how he can fight with them.
The same rule applies to later combat skills. Learning ki sensing or refining techniques derived from Zetten makes Asta a more precise fighter and Anti-Magic user. It does not reveal dormant conventional magic.
What Is Canon and What Is Theory
Explicit canon is that Asta has no magical power, Licita is his mother, Licita involuntarily drains magical power and life force, Liebe is a magicless devil associated with Anti-Magic, and Asta's five-leaf grimoire connects him to Liebe and the swords. Complete Grimoire supplies the prenatal link between Licita's condition and Asta's missing magic.
A reasonable character inference is that Licita's decision to separate from Asta was driven by the danger her condition posed to him. Her later relationship with Liebe shows how unusual it was for someone to remain safely near her.
What is not supported is the claim that Asta possesses secret magic, that someone deliberately removed his magic as part of a plan, or that a particular father caused the condition. None of those theories is needed to explain the finished canon.
Asta's Lack of Magic Is the Foundation, Not the Hidden Power
The answer becomes clear when the major canon milestones are read together. Chapter 97 establishes that magical power does not dwell in Asta. Volume 27 reveals Licita's life-force-and-magic-draining condition. Complete Grimoire confirms that her condition drained Asta's magic while he was in the womb, while his life force remained.
Everything that makes Asta unusual in combat follows from that absence.
Because he has no magic, he can channel Liebe's Anti-Magic without erasing a native magical reserve. Because he trained his body relentlessly, he can wield the grimoire's massive swords. Because Liebe is sealed in the five-leaf grimoire, Asta has access to the force that turns those weapons into magic-negating tools.
The completed manga through Volume 38 never reverses the premise by revealing a dormant magic attribute. Asta's defining strength is not that he secretly had magic all along. It is that a boy born without it learned to master a completely different power.
