Is Asta Stronger Than Nacht?
Asta's later manga feats favor him over Nacht in direct combat. Compare their Devil Union training, Spade raid battles, Zetten, and tactical strengths.

Yes, the later manga gives Asta the stronger case in direct combat, especially once Devil Union matures and he adds Zetten and finer Anti-Magic control. Nacht begins their training as the superior fighter and remains more versatile as a scout, restrainer, and support mage.
There is no final clean rematch that settles every possible matchup. The later ranking is a conclusion from their demonstrated feats and abilities, not an explicit narrator ranking.
Spoiler scope: this comparison includes Devil Union training, the Spade Kingdom raid, Zetten, and the final manga battles.
At the start of training, Nacht is clearly stronger
Chapter 270 establishes the setup. After Asta forms an equal contract with Liebe, Nacht demonstrates Unite Mode: Canis and tells Asta and Liebe to defeat him. Nacht already understands devil contracts, Devil Union, Mana Zone, Shadow Magic, and the combat applications of his four contracted devils.
Chapter 272 makes the gap explicit: Asta and Liebe have been losing to Nacht repeatedly, and Nacht is not fighting at full seriousness. Their biggest problem is synchronization. They have the raw ingredients for Devil Union but cannot yet bring their power together consistently.
Asta's lack of magic is not itself an instant win condition. For the foundation of that ability, see why Asta has no magic. Anti-Magic becomes overwhelming only when he can apply it with enough speed, control, and coordination.

Chapter 273 is the first big turning point
Asta's position changes once he and Liebe synchronize.
In Chapter 273, their first successful Devil Union moment erases Nacht's magic and Mana Zone in its immediate effect. Nacht concedes the exchange. That establishes a much higher peak for Asta's Anti-Magic output.
But Nacht refuses to send Asta straight into the Spade Kingdom because he and Liebe can maintain the form only briefly and have not mastered it. Winning one explosive exchange does not give Asta better combat control, endurance, or battlefield judgment than his teacher.
| Stage | Direct combat edge | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Start of Nacht's training | Nacht | Better mastery, versatility, tactics, and repeated wins |
| First successful Devil Union | Asta's peak output jumps ahead | Anti-Magic erases Nacht's magic, but the form is unstable |
| Spade raid and later battles | Asta has the stronger feat-based case | Greater finishing power and later improvements in control |
The Spade raid shows why Asta's matchup becomes dangerous
Nacht's fight with Lilith and Nahamah shows both his strength and his limits. He can combine devil powers, use Shadow Magic at a high level, and create specialized techniques such as Monument of Atonement. Against the supreme devils, he cannot finish them alone.
Asta arrives in Chapter 288 using Devil Union and changes the fight. His Anti-Magic cuts through the supreme devils' Demon Fire and Demon Ice, abilities that had overwhelmed Nacht's sealing technique.
When Lilith and Nahamah fuse, their magical power increases enormously. Asta can cut through their attacks, reflect their massive spell, and destroy the fused devil in Chapter 290. Nacht provides a crucial restraint so Asta can land the finishing blow before Devil Union expires; this is not a purely solo feat.
Asta has the better finishing weapon, while Nacht's support creates the opening that makes the finish possible. "Stronger"and"more useful" are not identical.
Asta's true Devil Union pushes the gap further
In Chapter 327, Asta and Liebe reach a deeper state of synchronization that Nacht recognizes as true Union. Their Anti-Magic can negate magic through physical contact, letting Asta resist and injure Lucifero at a level he could not reach before.
Chapter 328 continues that sequence, with Asta cutting apart Lucifero's manifested body before his short Union window ends. This is a breakthrough against Lucifero's incomplete manifestation, not proof that Asta has surpassed a fully manifested Lucifero.
Nacht remains important through mobility, restraints, and coordination with Yami. Asta has become the squad's decisive anti-devil weapon, but he still benefits from allies creating opportunities.
For the Yami side of that battle, Yami's survival after Lucifero explains how close both men come to dying.
Later Asta is not the same fighter Nacht trained
After his Devil Union breakthroughs, Asta continues developing. In the Land of the Sun, Chapter 339 introduces Zetten as a way to release power in a focused burst. Asta adapts the principle to Anti-Magic rather than ordinary magical power.
That gives him a more refined way to turn ki reading, timing, swordsmanship, and Anti-Magic into a decisive counterattack.
By Chapter 366, he has much tighter control. He strips away Damnatio's magical advantages and defeats him with a Zetten counter. Chapter 367 shows Asta distribute Anti-Magic power to the Black Bulls, extending his control beyond coating his own body and swords.

Nacht also gets stronger
Chapter 385 gives Nacht an advanced multi-devil Unite while he fights Morgen alongside Yami and Ichika. That reinforces his strengths: layered abilities, battlefield manipulation, restraints, mobility, and teamwork.
His toolkit is more varied than Asta's in several practical ways. Shadow Magic lets him move allies, hide attacks, bind enemies, scout, and create openings. His four devils give him different modes for different problems.
Asta is more specialized, but Anti-Magic is especially effective in a world where most major fighters depend on magic.
Who would win: Asta or Nacht?
A later-story direct fight favors Asta because Nacht's main weapons are magical, and Asta can erase or cut through magic. Asta also has the physical strength, ki sensing, sword skill, Devil Union, and Zetten timing to exploit an opening.
Nacht's best chance would come from tactics rather than overpowering Asta head-on. He is experienced at stealth, positioning, feints, restraints, and multi-angle support. He also understands Asta's habits because he trained him. Time limits and the conditions of the fight still matter; Anti-Magic does not make every opponent's speed or strategy irrelevant.
By the final battles, Asta fights Lucius at the center of the war and defeats Yuno in their deciding duel in Chapter 391. Those feats strengthen his direct-combat case, but they do not replace a rematch with Nacht. The most defensible conclusion is that Asta has surpassed his teacher in finishing power, while Nacht remains valuable for abilities a simple one-on-one ranking does not measure.
