Ah, summer. The time for beaches, summer festivals, and the start of a new anime season. And with every anime that comes out, the waifu wars start right back up again! The lineup for anime waifus this summer 2022 looks especially promising.
I mean, that’s not to say we didn’t get some great anime waifus to fangirl over in Spring! The variety was endless there, from Marin Kitagawa from My Dress-Up Darling, a glamorous cosplayer who brought a refreshing twist on the typical high school trope, to Yor Forger from Spy X Family, a lovable femme fatale who is as ruthless as she is endearing. We were spoiled for choice then and looks like Summer 2022 will be no exception.
Okay, I think I’m getting ahead of myself. I mean, what makes for a good anime waifu? According to most netizens, an anime waifu is the one true partner they’d love to be committed to. The character must have the perfect mix of funny, intelligent, quirky, and, yes, beauty.
Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder so everyone’s ultimate waifu differs. You can be a gentle princess enthusiast, like Hinata Hyuuga from Naruto Shippuden. Or maybe you like your anime waifus a little more unhinged, like Yumeko Jabami from Kakegurui. Of course, you can also have multiple ones, even from the same anime so you’re never pressed for choice.
Anime studios are gunning down to animate the best waifu of 2022. Hence, the competition is fierce this year. Right now, we will be ranking the top female anime waifus we’re excited about this season!
1. Chizuru Ichinose – Rent-a-Girlfriend
We’re starting strong here, with Chizuru Ichinose, from Rent-A-Girlfriend! Honestly, imagine being able to befriend someone as cool as Chizuru. Sure, she appears sweet and unassuming but long-time viewers know that behind that façade? There lies a sharp-edged, calculating woman who was once even a delinquent in middle school!
Of course, that doesn’t mean she’s cruel or an ice princess by any means. She is known to be genuinely kind-hearted, especially to those in need of a helping hand. And she has a sensitive streak too! According to Sayuri Ichinose, her grandma, she was a ‘clingy cry-baby’ when younger.
With her chestnut-hued hair, demure brown eyes, and frilly styling, it’s no wonder people fall for the act. And then when they realize her true personality? They proceed to fall for her, period.
You can expect to fall for Chizuru again during season 2, coming July 2022.
2. Hestia – Danmachi
Man, the way Hestia from Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? took over the collective anime conscious was wild. Hestia is the Goddess of the Hearth and head of the Hestia Familia. She also happens to be the patron deity to our protagonist, Bell Caranal, acting as his protector on his journey to becoming an adventurer.
Even if you’ve never watched DanMachi, you know exactly who Hestia is by design alone. The sweet, petite goddess with her white dress and the iconic blue ribbon ensemble led to a viral trend where women were trying to dress up like her.
But honestly, what makes Hestia the ultimate waifu isn’t just her looks. Despite having a hyperactive demeanor, she is known for being impartial and kind amongst other gods. And her chemistry with Bell goes beyond just a love interest. Their interactions are heart-warming, alongside Hestia’s unwavering faith in his abilities.
Hestia will return to bless our screens during DanMachi season 4, scheduled for July 2022!
3. Kanon Shibuya – Love Live! Superstar!!
I can already hear the great music from Love Live! Superstar!! and the brutal waifu wars that’ll follow the girls from the idol group. Personally, I’m rooting for Kanon Shibuya.
Kanon is observed as being shy and easily flustered, compared to the others, but dreams of singing on stage one day. She thinks of herself as average, at best, when she’s extraordinary in her talent. And that humbleness alongside her simple wish to make others happy puts her above the rest.
Love Live! Superstar!! Season 2 will air in July 2022.
4. Vermeil – Vermeil in Gold
Tall waifu alert! I mean who doesn’t like a girl that can kill them with one blow? And Vermeil, the demoness from the upcoming anime adaptation of Vermeil In Gold, promises exactly that.
Conniving, powerful, and seductive, Vermeil was accidentally summoned by Alto Goldfield in a desperate attempt to not be held back a year at the Wizardry School he is attending. Of course, she turns out to be an evil flirty demon that was sealed away in a grimoire, hiding a traumatic past. But she sticks around as Alto’s carefree but possessive Familiar, both aiding and frustrating him to no end.
Viewers can catch the duos’ shenanigans when the anime premiers in July 2022.
5. Honami Ichinose – Classroom of the Elite
Honami Ichinose from Classroom of the Elite can be best described as a Saintess. A second-year student at Advanced Nurturing High School, she is competing alongside other leaders for their class to gain the title of Class A.
Honami is very steadfast in her morals. She is one of the most alluring students but her reputation for being an extremely just pacifist makes her a force to be reckoned with. She treats everyone with benevolence, even if they are from a lower class, making her immensely popular among the student body. The kind-hearted demeanor coupled with a single-minded determination is why even her rivals respect her.
Honami returns for season 2 in July 2022.
6. Emi Yusa – The Devil Is A Part-Timer
Emi Yusa being the poster waifu of enemies-to-lovers was not what I expected when watching The Devil Is A Part-Timer, but it works!
She has two personalities: Emilia, the Hero who defeated the Demon King Satan, and Emi, the call center agent who must put up with Sadao Maou, his reincarnation. And both personalities work together to make for an interesting dynamic. Her strong sense of responsibility and determination, while being displaced in a mundane world is so endearing. It doesn’t hurt that she’s as cute as a button!
Fans of the reverse Isekai comedy can find Emi and her disdain back on screens in July 2022.
7. Mary Saotome – Kakegurui Twin
I am a very recent convert of Kakegurui, and already Mary Saotome is a favorite. Her role reversal from arrogant bad guy to the reluctant ally of Yumeko Jabami sends me every time.
The girl’s just fun. She’s the perfect balance of crazy but also analytic and cynical. She even shows to become fond of Ryota, her former house pet, and Yumeko, the one who reduced her to debt in the first place. Also, unlike the other students at Hyakkaou Private Academy, Mary is on a scholarship thanks to her intelligence! We stan an intellectual waifu in this household.
Lucky for Mary fans, her story will be explored further in the prequel airing in August 2022.
8. Ais Wallenstein – Danmachi
Yay for multiple anime waifus from the same anime! Ais Wallenstein is a skilled adventurer in Orario and part of the Loki Familia. She is believed to be one of the strongest first-class adventurers, known by the moniker ‘Sword Princess’.
Ais is the complete opposite of Hestia. She is quiet, not very expressive with her emotions, and seriously ruthless when it comes to monsters. But she is very goal-oriented, with her sole reason in life being to get as strong as possible.
With her beautiful blonde hair, golden eyes, and powerful drive, it’s no wonder she gets confessions left and right. Though, her grace and beauty don’t reflect how she fights, which is plain brutal. I guess we know why Bell fell for her at first sight!
Ais’s enthusiasts can also see the sword maiden returning in DanMachi season 4, airing July 2022.
9. Nazuna Nanakusa – Call Of The Night
Vampire waifu lovers rejoice! The Call Of The Night anime will be bringing the tale of insomniac mortal, Kou Yamori, and lazy vampiress, Nazuna Nanakusa, to life.
Sharing a love for the nighttime, Nazuna is laid back but not exactly friendly. Her personality leads her to be relaxed and openly talkative, especially to newcomers. She’s just cool. Chill anime waifus is such an unexplored trope, and I’m glad we’re getting something with Nazuna here.
You can tour the town after dark with Nazuna starting July 2022.
10. Samidare Asahina – Lucifer And The Biscuit Hammer
Damn, the late 2000’s nostalgia that came when the anime adaptation for Lucifer And The Biscuit Hammer was announced, it’s no joke.
Old manga enthusiasts may remember Samidare Asahina, the cute princess from the story that could bench press Yuuhi Amamiya, the male lead, into the ground and K.O. a Golem with a single punch. Her energetic and pleasant demeanor is in direct conflict with her goal, which is to save the world so she can destroy it instead?
We love a vengeful queen! And you can watch her, nearly 12 years later, starting July 2022!
So, what are your anime waifus of the summer season from this list? And if she isn’t on the list, who is she, and what makes her better? Let the waifu wars commence!
