Jujutsu Kaisen has a range of antagonists that Yuji Itadori and the gang have to face. But out of all of them, none are more fearsome than the Disaster Curses in Jujutsu Kaisen and it’s plain to see why. I mean, if you’re a fan of the series, you already know that the first time it hurt us was directly because of Mahito, a Disaster Curse. But if you had to get into it, which Disaster Curse has scarred us the most?
Okay, so I know people think Mahito is the strongest Disaster Curse in Jujutsu Kaisen, but I actually have to disagree here. He’s certainly the most intimidating, for sure. But if we’re ranking sheer power? Then that title goes to Jogo, followed by Mahito and Dagon. Hanami ranks last, but that’s just how it goes. Mojito has outlasted most of the Disaster Curses, but that was more cunning than anything else.
But what even are Disaster Curses? They are a specific set of Special Grade Curses that are born from the fears of humanity itself, and they ended up coming together for a common goal. And that was to rid the world of Gojo Satoru, the strongest Sorcerer alive and the only threat to their plan to carry out the extermination of humanity. They later ended up aligning themselves with Kenjaku for better odds but things went a little wrong and, well.
However, it is interesting to see how the Disaster Curses would stack up against each other in Jujutsu Kaisen, considering they were the primary antagonists of the series for so long. That might not be the case anymore, but they were still a formidable force. So today, let’s try ranking the Disaster Curses in Jujutsu Kaisen, in yet another round of Get Ranked! Let’s dive right into it.
Table of Contents
4. Hanami
If Poison Ivy was a Special Grade Curse, they’d probably be something like Hanami. Born from a fear of natural disasters like earthquakes, Hanami pulls from the elements of earth and nature. And because of how intertwined he is with everything natural surrounding him, he has deep-seated hate for humanity and how they treat nature.
So, you’d think he’d be more powerful than the others since environmental fears are such a huge part of something out of humanity’s control. But he ranks at the bottom here. Though, underestimating him because of that isn’t the smartest idea. Hanami is more than capable of holding his own, and his durability and reflexes speak for themselves. Like, during the Sister School Exchange at Jujutsu High, no one was coming even close to landing a hit on him.
If we talk about his offense, the fact that he can control every natural thing around him is frightening. Like if you met Hanami in a forest? Just give up. No really, you’re not besting this Disaster Curse in his home territory. Disaster Plants means he conjures up Cursed Energy laden roots and vines from nowhere, and dissipates them just as quickly. Everything is a new weapon, whether it be flower blooms or the roots underneath.
But none of that would even matter if he didn’t have the smarts to back all that power up. See, Hanami has a very silent presence that means he can catch people off guard. This proves deadly because he is also a very smart fighter, taking advantage of vulnerabilities he picks up in his enemies. It’s how he was able to evade the Six Eyes that Gojo Satoru used. But as powerful and talented as he is, his inexperience is ultimately what led to him being defeated.
3. Dagon
So, Dagon’s thing is that he’s basically a less peak version of Cthulhu. Born as the Disaster Curse of the seas and oceans, Dagon is a manifestation of humanity’s fears regarding natural disasters such as Tsunamis and the unknown monsters of the deep. However, he didn’t really have an actualised form until we got to the Shibuya Incident.
Dagon evolved from a Cursed Womb to a more humanoid curse during the events of the Shibuya Incident arc, and we got to see a bit more of that underwater Eldritch horror energy. Because while Hanami is strong and all, Dagon had the most hidden potential. And we saw it come to fruition when we see him go up against not one, but two Special Grade Sorcerers who are veterans at this point. He incapacitated Naobito Zenin and Nanami Kento, after all.
To Dagon, water is the ultimate weapon and he can just create it, much like Hanami with his plants. Which means he’s never truly unarmed. Couple that with his Domain Expansion and it’s a match that’s hard to beat. Speaking of, The Horizon Of The Captivating Skandha is one of the most disarming Domain Expansions out there, but it’s also a ‘can’t-miss’ attack. Meaning whoever gets caught up in its trap is going to get hurt badly.
Dagon is insane when it comes to his fighting power, quickly gaining intelligence despite technically being ‘born’ a few chapters ago. He’s quick, with an honestly haunting arsenal of attacks and aggression that is reminiscent of some of the horrors hidden at the bottom of the ocean. The only reason he was brought down by Toji Fushiguro was because he got pulled out of the battle and got disoriented.
2. Mahito
Okay, I know this one is going to cause controversy, considering Mahito did end up outlasting all the other Disaster Curses in Jujutsu Kaisen. But just because we’ve placed him second, doesn’t mean he isn’t one of the most menacing villains in the entire series. Like, Mojito is frightening, in both his power levels and with how cunning he can be. But worst of all, his cruelty is intentional.
Mahito is the curse born from humans fearing other humans, of every negative feeling humanity has against its own. That’s such an insidious fear, built upon how humans have started competing against each other, and general antagonism. Which is why it makes sense that Mahito is the youngest out of all the Disaster Curses, making his intellect and natural leadership that much more impressive.
But it’s also frightening how his nature allows him to manipulate humanity on a whole, as easy as breathing. Mahito has an intrinsic understanding of how souls work, how much potential they hold to either build someone up or ruin them completely by breaking their spirit. And it’s this knowledge that he incorporates in Idle Transfiguration, a Cursed Technique that can pull his opponents into illusions that pull from their own intrinsic horrors. Subsequently, Mojito can separate his own body from the soul and use it like a shield, a third form he can command and attack with as he pleases.
But that also makes Mahito incredibly flexible, which means he’s just as good at combat as he is with his powers. No matter how Mahito gets hit, he always regenerates and comes back, but now with the added knowledge of how to evade the attack next time. And really, it is Mahito’s intelligence that gives him an edge above everyone. He’s deadly from afar, and even deadlier up close.
1. Jogo
Okay, so clearly Mahito is almost the perfect Curse. So what gives Jogo the edge here? Well, despite how much Jogo gets bodied in battles, he does have a right to be arrogant. Out of all the Disaster Curses, it’s Jogo who was the initial biggest threat to humanity. Because he truly, genuinely believed that the Curses were the original humans, and that humans themselves were just beings of lies.
Jogo is explosive, which makes sense considering how he appears to be the corporeal form of a Volcanic disaster. The kind that can cover the entire earth in a noxious cloud and destroy entire cities in one eruption, leaving everything in a standstill like the Pompeii Disaster. And I think that alone is enough to see why his fire would be all-consuming, just an edge above his other fellow Disaster Curses. It’s how he was able to deal fatal blows to Nanami and Naobito, and burn Maki Zenin horribly. All before they could even determine what was happening.
Jogo has shown an incredible amount of control over his skills, incinerating an entire restaurant and the people in it without any show of exertion. He is so precise in his attacks, leaving no stone unturned when he starts focusing on an enemy. And it’s that determination that makes him such a huge threat when compared to other Disaster Curses. Like, the others are still a little light hearted, but it feels like exterminating humanity is Jogo’s only reason to exist. And he is confident in achieving the goal.
But the other reason he’s topping this list? Well, sure Jogo gets beaten up when it comes to larger scale battles but when he decided to go up against Ryomen Sukuna alone? Like, don’t get me started, but Jogo actually held his own against him better than any other curse here. And Sukuna feels like he’s enjoying the battle, for once. Like, say what you will about Jogo, but the man actually was more powerful than the plot gave him credit for.
In any case, all the Disaster Curses are now effectively gone. And Jujutsu Kaisen seems to be no less worse for wear when it comes to villains. However, even if Mahito was a crowd favorite, it was clearly Jogo who was the strongest Disaster Curse.
