How Does Gerard Valkyrie Die?

Gerard's Death Is Not a Normal Captain Victory

Gerard's final battle is easy to misremember because the Soul Reapers appear to kill him several times. Each apparent victory is visually decisive. He is smashed into the battlefield, dismembered, cut in half, frozen, and ultimately left without most of his upper body. Under ordinary Bleach combat logic, more than one of those attacks would have ended the fight.

Gerard is different because he is Sternritter "M," The Miracle, and a member of Yhwach's Schutzstaffel. His power makes disastrous situations work in his favor. During the Wahrwelt battle, severe injuries do not merely fail to stop him; they repeatedly become the basis for his next transformation.

That distinction matters to the answer. Kenpachi, Hitsugaya, and Byakuya prove that they can damage Gerard at an extraordinary level. What they do not demonstrate in the manga is that destroying his current body is enough to keep him dead.

The actual final interruption comes from above the battlefield. Yhwach activates Auswählen and reclaims power from his own subordinates. Gerard is caught in the selection, his body is stripped down to bone, and he dies. The sequence occurs in the manga's final stretch, in Chapter 680.

So saying "Byakuya killed Gerard," "Hitsugaya froze Gerard to death,"or"Kenpachi bisected him and won" describes only temporary stages of the battle, not Gerard's canonical manga death.

What The Miracle Does

The Miracle is the reason Gerard can turn apparently fatal damage into momentum.

Gerard describes miracles as events that occur when circumstances make success seem impossible. His Schrift manifests that principle in battle. As the Soul Reapers damage him and begin to believe bringing down such a monster should be possible, Gerard converts his wounds into a larger and stronger body. His physical size rises dramatically, his spiritual power increases, and injuries that should disable him instead feed another escalation.

The ability is therefore more than ordinary regeneration. Regeneration would return Gerard to the condition he was in before an injury. The Miracle repeatedly returns him better positioned than before.

His weapon, Hoffnung, reinforces the same theme. Gerard identifies the sword with the hopes of the people, and damaging it can rebound harm onto the attacker. That makes the obvious solution - hit the giant knight and break his weapon - dangerous in both directions.

Gerard's unusual nature also goes beyond being a powerful Quincy. The manga identifies him as the heart of the Soul King, paralleling other pieces of the Soul King that become active players in the Thousand-Year Blood War. That background helps explain why Gerard feels less like a conventional Sternritter with one trick and more like a supernatural calamity that keeps violating normal expectations.

The Miracle is still not best summarized as "Gerard is absolutely immortal." Tite Kubo later clarified through his Klub Outside Q&A that the cross-like core exposed during Gerard's battle was indeed his core and that destroying it would have defeated him. The crucial point for the manga's actual events is that the captains do not accomplish that before Yhwach intervenes.

Byakuya's First "Kill" Makes Gerard Stronger

Gerard initially confronts a large group of surviving Soul Reapers rather than only the three captains most associated with the fight. Byakuya, Renji, the Visored, and others all become involved as Gerard blocks the route through Wahrwelt.

The first important pattern emerges when the Shinigami appear to overwhelm him. Gerard takes heavy damage and is knocked down, creating what looks like a straightforward victory over another elite Quincy.

Instead, The Miracle activates on a much larger scale.

Gerard rises as a giant, turning the improbability of his survival into a physical transformation. His new size lets him dominate the battlefield and treat captain-class opponents as comparatively tiny targets. From this point onward, "doing more damage" becomes an increasingly unreliable strategy because each successful assault risks giving The Miracle another crisis to overturn.

Tōshirō Hitsugaya uses Hyōrinmaru's ice to restrain Gerard, while Byakuya's Senbonzakura provides the range and destructive volume needed to fight something of Gerard's scale. Their combined pressure is substantial, but Gerard repeatedly breaks through what would stop an ordinary opponent.

This is the visual idea an illustrator should emphasize: the Soul Reapers have clearly hurt Gerard, yet the result is a towering new body looming over Wahrwelt rather than a corpse.Giant Gerard Valkyrie rising over Wahrwelt after surviving Byakuya and the Soul Reapers, with Byakuya and Toshiro facing his newly enlarged form

Kenpachi Cuts Gerard Apart - and Still Does Not End Him

Kenpachi Zaraki's arrival changes the fight from coordinated containment into a contest of overwhelming physical power.

Even before using Bankai, Kenpachi can sever Gerard's enlarged limbs and challenge his strength directly. Gerard simply regenerates and becomes more dangerous. The escalation eventually pushes Kenpachi to release the Bankai of Nozarashi, giving him enough raw force to tear through Gerard on a scale the other fighters had struggled to match.

Kenpachi's Bankai slices Gerard's enormous body in two.

For a moment, that looks like the clearest possible answer to The Miracle: if Gerard can regrow a limb, destroy the entire body.

It fails.

The two halves are drawn back into another miraculous restoration, and Gerard returns in an even more imposing state, incorporating his Quincy: Vollständig. The attack that should have been Kenpachi's finishing move instead produces another stage of Gerard's evolution.

Kenpachi also cannot simply continue increasing his output forever. His newly awakened Bankai places tremendous strain on his own body. His arm gives out under the force he is trying to wield, limiting his ability to capitalize on the damage he inflicted.

This is why it is inaccurate to say Gerard "lost to Bankai Kenpachi." Kenpachi demonstrates that Gerard can be physically bisected, but the manga deliberately follows that feat by showing The Miracle reverse its apparent finality.

Adult Hitsugaya and Byakuya Come Even Closer

The next major attempt is more technical.

As Daiguren Hyōrinmaru reaches maturity, Hitsugaya temporarily takes on an adult appearance and gains access to the completed power of his Bankai. His ice is no longer simply a matter of producing larger frozen structures. He can freeze targets and suppress the function of what he freezes, which lets him neutralize Hoffnung rather than continuing to trade attacks with its troublesome effect.

Hitsugaya freezes Gerard solid, but even that is not enough by itself. Gerard breaks free and grabs him. Kenpachi, still badly damaged, helps topple the giant, creating an opening for Hitsugaya's ice to spread again.

Byakuya then uses Senkei and his secret technique Ikka Senjinka to destroy Gerard's head. Hitsugaya freezes and shatters what remains of the giant upper body.

This is the captains' closest-looking victory. Gerard has lost his head and torso, Hitsugaya is exhausted, and the battlefield finally appears to contain too little of him to regenerate normally.

Then The Miracle activates again.

Energy gathers over Gerard's surviving lower body and rebuilds him in another altered form. Rukia and Renji arrive to find that the monster their allies seemingly destroyed is still fighting. Even after the captains combine overwhelming physical destruction, advanced ice, and Byakuya's refined Bankai techniques, Gerard remains active.

That revival is the clearest evidence that the manga does not award the captains a normal kill.

Yhwach's Auswählen Is What Finally Kills Gerard

Gerard's real death happens because Yhwach no longer needs to preserve him.

Auswählen is Yhwach's ability to select Quincy and reclaim power from them. Earlier in the war, it is used on Quincy whom Yhwach judges expendable so that power can be redistributed to his elite forces. The Schutzstaffel themselves benefit from an earlier Auswählen after Squad Zero appears to defeat them.

Near the end of the war, that relationship reverses.

Yhwach has absorbed the Soul King's power and is moving toward his final confrontation. Gerard is still outside fighting Byakuya, Hitsugaya, and the remaining Soul Reapers when Yhwach performs another selection. Jugram Haschwalth is also struck elsewhere.

Gerard has no dramatic final exchange with the captains. Auswählen catches him while the battle is ongoing. His enormous body loses its flesh, leaving a skeleton before he disappears from the fight. The Miracle does not produce another comeback after Yhwach reclaims him.

Thematically, there is a sharp irony in the outcome. Gerard spends his battle presenting himself as an invincible divine warrior whose impossible reversals prove his favored status, only for his own king to dispose of him when his power becomes more useful elsewhere. That reading is interpretation, but the event itself is unambiguous manga canon: Yhwach's Auswählen is the cause of Gerard's final death.

The second illustration should therefore avoid giving any captain a victorious finishing pose. Gerard should still be standing over the battlefield when the selection strikes from above, while Byakuya and Hitsugaya look on at an enemy they had not actually managed to keep down.Gerard Valkyrie being stripped to a skeletal form by Yhwach's Auswahlen while Byakuya and exhausted adult Toshiro witness his sudden final collapse

Could the Captains Have Killed Gerard Without Auswählen?

The manga itself does not show them doing so, which is the safest starting point.

Their attacks repeatedly destroy parts of Gerard's body and at times almost all of it, yet The Miracle keeps restoring him. The battle ends before the surviving captains discover and successfully exploit a permanent weakness.

Kubo's later clarification adds an important qualification. In Klub Outside Q&A material, he confirmed that the Quincy cross-like object seen when Kenpachi cuts Gerard apart functions as Gerard's core. Had that core been destroyed, Gerard could have been defeated.

That clarification means "only Auswählen can possibly kill Gerard" is too absolute. There is a theoretical defeat condition outside Yhwach's selection.

But it does not retroactively turn Kenpachi, Hitsugaya, or Byakuya into Gerard's killer. None of them destroys the core in the published manga. Their best combined sequence destroys Gerard's head and upper body, after which he reforms again.

For a canon-focused answer, two statements can therefore coexist: Gerard was not literally unbeatable by any conceivable means, but the captains did not achieve the required permanent victory during the fight we see.

Manga and anime continuity

Gerard's Auswählen death is confirmed manga canon. VIZ publishes the complete Bleach manga through Volume 74, and the fatal selection occurs in Chapter 680 during the final battles against Yhwach.

The Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War anime reaches Gerard's battle in its late-war episodes. The exact ending explained here comes from the completed manga, which remains the definitive source for the sequence and Auswahlen's role in it.

The final cour began airing in Japan on July 25, 2026. The official anime site lists Episode 44, "THE PERFECT CRIMSON," as the latest aired episode. Its official synopsis specifically describes Kenpachi, Hitsugaya, and Byakuya fighting together while Gerard's Miracle continues to resist them. The episode also introduces Hitsugaya's completed Bankai form.

That distinction matters because the Thousand-Year Blood War anime has already expanded and rearranged parts of Tite Kubo's original final arc. It would be premature to claim that the adaptation is guaranteed to stage Gerard's last moments exactly as the manga does.

Unless the anime changes the outcome in a future episode, however, the source-material answer remains definitive: the captains repeatedly push Gerard to apparent death, The Miracle repeatedly brings him back stronger, and Yhwach ultimately ends the cycle by using Auswählen on his own Schutzstaffel warrior.
