He suffers from a "phobia of printed text"—a condition where seeing printed words makes him physically ill—stemming from a severe scolding he received from his grandmother over a trivial prank during elementary school.
Consequently, he has lived a life far removed from reading, though deep down, he harbors a longing for books. While he can barely read books, he is able to read manga for extended periods, and he can sometimes finish short stories before his symptoms set in.
