What is an Isekai without its harem elements? I mean, that’s like macaroni without the cheese! And in Eminence in Shadow, the variation of best girls is honestly elite. However, the main protagonist himself? Yeah, he doesn’t look very interested. Which is why the question of whether Cid Kagenou will ever marry anyone comes up so often amongst fans of the newly popular Isekai series.
Of course, Cid Kagenou is bound to marry someone by the end of the series. But for now, the man is really not too pressed about the whole idea of holy matrimony. Instead, he’s way too focused on his current mission, which is to dismantle the Cult Of Diablos using his own secret organization known as the Shadow Garden. He’s too invested in ridding this fantastical world of the threats they pose, which means no time for love!
And honestly? I kind of prefer it that way, and I think most other fans do as well. Eminence in Shadow is shaping up to be one of the more promising Isekai shows in recent memory, and that’s due to how the story presents itself. By not taking certain tropes of the genre seriously, and playing others up, it ends up being a refreshing twist. Which is what ends up making it so enjoyable.
So, this also ends up extending to the protagonist of the tale, Cid Kagenou. Like, they aren’t messing around with the ‘daft protagonist’ schtick here. Cid Kagenou’s near delusional ‘main character syndrome’ doesn’t leave much room for regular romance. But let’s discuss that and more in another segment of Waifu Wars!

The Love Interests In Eminence In Shadow Are Fighting For Their Lives
Look, the funniest thing about all of this is that there isn’t a lack of possible love interests for Cid Kagenou. Like, if the boy could look up from his obsession for trying to be the coolest person in the room, he’d see that there are plenty of girls that have shown interest in him.
Alexia Midgar would be one of the biggest candidates for future Mrs Cid Kagenou, solely because they have some history there. I mean, it was a sham but still. Cid confessed to Alexia, the Second Princess of the Midgar Kingdom, on the pretense of a bet. However, instead of rejecting Cid Kagenou outright, she actually decided to go out with him because she had her own ulterior motives of annoying her actual betrothed, Zenon Griffey. Despite both parties knowing the relationship was fake, Cid and Alexia found that they got along really well and Alexia quickly caught the feelings for him. Even after they ‘broke up’, Alexia remained loyal to him and provided aid whenever needed.
The other potential love interest of note is Shelley Barnett, who is an upperclassmen at Midgar Royal Spellsword Academy. Which means she just so happens to be Cid’s senior in said Academy. They had a meet-cute where Cid unknowingly gave her some chocolate, leading to friendship. Of course, Shelley’s feelings went from platonic to romantic pretty fast, as is Isekai logic. However, here Cid actually does take care of her, even saying that she is ‘important’ to the plot playing out.
There are, of course, many other girls that have become a member of Cid’s circle like Nina, Akane and Alpha. But honestly, none of them are getting any reciprocated feelings from our leading lad. Like, the femmes are struggling with how oblivious Cid Kagenou can be and it’s genuinely funny to see.
Cid Kagenou Isn’t Marrying Anyone Anytime Soon
Which brings us to our main issue: Cid Kagenou just isn’t that into anyone, but himself. Let me explain. Cid is not even his real identity, because our protagonist is actually a regular 15 year old teenager from modern day Japan named Minoru. Minoru happens to be a Chūnibyō, which is basically the Japanese term for ‘someone who really believes he is the Chosen One™’.
Minoru thinks that there are grand conspiracies and major events centered only around him which is unhealthy, for sure. And so, when he gets Isekai’d away to a land where all of this is true and he’s a super smart, super talented wizard? Yeah, the kid isn’t really going to notice anything besides the chance to be the hero he always deluded himself to be. Of course, he thinks this is all just some elaborate role playing game, when this is now his real life.
Cid Kagenou doesn’t care for anything that isn’t about becoming the strongest opponent. He’s very self centered in that regard. He even calls his friends ‘allies’ because the idea of friendship doesn’t come to his mind when it’s so filled with strategies and scheming to ‘save the world’. So, it’s hard to see him getting married to anyone, when all he can see are his goals with the Shadow Garden.
Therefore, while Cid might end up marrying one of the many female characters that have fallen in love with him over time, it isn’t going to be anytime soon. For once, an Isekai could care less about its romantic fanservice, and isn’t that wild?
